How is the coin market doing these days?

In your particular segment of the market, how healthy is the market in terms of price & liquidity? Are prices going up, or down?

Prices are trending up. A couple National show dealers tipped me off....and like to cherry-pick me right before big shows. I'm thinking Baltimore is going to prove it. ( classics in holders)

It appears prices are holding, with perhaps a slight trend up continuing. This is just from casual observations online. Cheers, RickO

    Red Hot.

Buying lots of material and selling lots of material.

Extremely busy time in my slice of the market. <3

CAC Gold market is still very strong for Early gold and less common coins. Doug Winter has noticed that some gold coin prices have moved lower by 5-10%.

Major mint errors, die trials and unique patterns are very strong.

Circulated Seated Dollars with CAC approval are red hot. They have steadily enjoyed rising prices over the last 2 years. The same can not be said for the higher end MS segment of the market. SLDs without CAC have risen at a much slower rate in price, but these really have to be looked at on a coin by coin and date by date basis. Problem coins, straight graded or not… do not enjoy the same demand and sit in dealers inventory.

I do see common coins sitting in dealers sites so some things are not moving at current prices and dealers don’t want to lower prices.

Very difficult to find the good stuff (strong hands and limited availability) and when they show up ... bring the war chest, 'cause they wont be cheap. It's also fairly easy to sell anything other than problem coins if you price them right.

Will it last? Hard to tell. The last major auction (Monday) didn't seem as strong overall, but neither were the coins IMO.

This is for all dates of CBH's AU53 to 58, but the early and middle dates, the R4 or better coins, and of course, the more spectacular pieces, have all done the best from what I have seen.

Last week I attended a local monthly show. Two slabbed Morgans I asked to look at, from two different sellers, had reverse stickers indicating 3x the 2023 Red Book value. One of the two sellers was overheard saying he was buying more than selling and that's not the way it was supposed to be. Gee, I wonder why. I left empty handed and in dismay.

Who uses Red Book for pricing Morgans?

My checking account and back pocket is helping it! I could use some relief, but that ain't happening. This is a possible option if I really get short on cash.

But I don't want to join Mr Henning either. Ya think some one might notice it? :s:#:s

It would sound like it was you. Or you could have meant the two dealers. But it's been a long time since I've seen anyone over the age of 12 do that.

Early Walkers are going for about double what they did 10-15 years ago, so I'm happy.

There is another tranche of Fairmont coming next month so that will be a leading indicator.

I have 3 local coins shows held monthly that I attend. I haven't been looking at any gold but all else seems healthy and doing ok. If not trending up then holding steady. I haven't seen anything I like dropping.

I have no idea. The coins I am looking for rarely show up. When they do, they are either numismatic abortions for the grade, or someone sells a family member that he actually likes to get them.

I am reading that the quality of the next set of coins is not as good. Also the rarity is down. I would expect lower prices because of that.

Sometimes ultra-moderns as there aren't many options for retail pricing a 2012 nickel.

Sold a CAC Bust dollar in a weekly HA auction recently and with BP it sold for $3250. Bought it on GC a few months ago for $3100. Sold it because I didn’t like it and found a much nicer one.

Reading between the lines, you lost several hundred dollars, hinting at a weakening bust dollar market?

I don't think he made any implications.

The coin sold for slightly more money in a few months. How I did is really not relevant. I’m not a market expert but my one example doesn’t suggest any significant market weakness. And of course it’s impossible to draw any conclusions on one example.

Metals are doing well on ebay, common coins and prolific certifieds are very weak imo. High end hard to find coins are doing well. After the elections things will likely change.

  • Eldorado9Eldorado9 Posts: 2,362 ✭✭✭✭✭

I watch for higher grade proof type, larger denoms, and there just aren't any for sale....I mean virtually zero. When a really good piece comes up in auction, it generally goes for very strong money.
