Opinions on this eBay flowing hair dollar?

For starters, I am shocked that someone is selling an unslabbed flowing hair dollar. Seems worthwhile to pay for certification and then sell it.

Anyhoo, do you think it's genuine? Altered? Cleaned? I have my own opinions, but I am trying to get better at judging/grading coins, so I want to hear what you all have to say.

While an old cleaning for sure i think it has a shot at MA VF. I would be most worried at rim repair or unforeseen damage

I don't like the thought of buying a coin that valuable un-slabbed but everything appears genuine to me, interesting because I'm positive it would go for a lot more $$ if it was slabbed...

I think it’s genuine, but with problems. In addition to some cleaning, I think the rim has been filed at 3k on the obverse.

I’m not at all positive the coin would bring more, if slabbed. I doubt that it would receive a straight grade and for all we know, it might bring a straight grade price, as is.

The seller has plenty of coins listed - some of them in holders - so he’s certainly aware of the upside of slabbed coins. Yet, he’s offering this one, ungraded and likely has a good reason for that. Perhaps it already received a details grade, previously. Let’s see what it brings.

The reverse will probably details grade for graffiti.

I would be with @MasonG on that.

Also, like many ... looks authentic, but it has a few issues, possibly even some (third side) that can't be seen

It does appear authentic.... but one wonders how/why it has remained raw. Of course, there could be several valid reasons, but just surprising for a coin like that. Cheers, RickO

Saw quite a few rare coins in the raw on the "Boston Banker Coin Auction" collection that were offered by Gold Standard Auctions on liveauctioneers.com :o

If anything I still like the coin, fwiw

I would guess that it has been submitted, just seems pretty unlikely that an owner wouldn't have given it a try at some point in its past. Body bag? Details grade, with description of damage? We'll never know.

I did some research on PCGS and identified the the coin as a BB-27, B-5 (https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1795-1-b-5-bb-27-3-leaves/39977).

I ended up winning the auction for $4,051.99. I think I did pretty well, but feel free to give me your thoughts..

Below is the coin I won, along with two other examples of the same variety (and approximately the same condition) that were sold this year.

Probably not a bad price for the coin given the condition, looks VF details and attractive looking. My rough rule of thumb is a decent looking "details" coin is worth half of a comparable "straight-graded" coin. There are probably comparable "details" graded coins in Heritage or Stack's auction archives which may give you some better "comps".

Hi all, first post here. I was one of the final bidders, tried to 'snipe' with a few seconds left, but my bid started with a 3, not a 4, so congrats to you!

I spent the $10 to have NGC give an estimate, they said likely NOT details, grade under 35. So if this turns out to straight grade you got a real nice deal.

Congrats! If you decide to send it in for grading, let us know how it turns out. Best, Leo

Wow, that is great! Late to the thread, but I thought vf details with reverse environmental damage.

Nice pick up. And less than 3 weeks turn around for grading. That's about what I've been seeing. Altogether great results for you.

    Will it straight grade?

The coin has had an old cleaning and has a rim bump and possible corrosion under the black tar-like toning on the reverse. However, I was surprised that several experts who I respect here thought it wouldn't straight grade. I guess they haven't noticed the quality of coins that straight grade these days. Or they're thinking in terms of whether they would purchase the coin for their collection or keep searching. This looks like a "C" coin to me, an old coin with some issues, an example of why CAC was started in the first place.

It may have been given a details grade 18 years ago but not these days. I bet it would straight grade with PCGS as well.

Wow wow, I wish I had outbid you, what a bargain, everything I see around that quality is 6-7K. Congrats, the obverse is about as good as it gets for the grade, enjoy !
