Would you straight-grade this quarter? If so, at what grade? If not, why?

I wouldn't straight grade it due to the rim damage
Same as above - rim damage.
Coin Photographer.
No straight grade from me...too much rim damage. That being said, the graders did not agree with me... Not the first time... Cheers, RickO
Is it one of those alignment strikes??
Why would anyone slab that coin?
George's hair is worn, Eagle chest id worn, damage, easy to find in better condition
In a couple of years, it'll be celebrating its 60th anniversary as the first clad coinage issued officially by the United States mint.
I have a Braided Hair Half Cent in MS 65 RB with a sticker that has a small rim ding. I guess it depends on how bad the powers that be thinks the rim ding(s) is / are. That said, I'm sure my coin got more attention at the TPG than this coin.

I was going to suggest it be good for a lowball set, but there are a few certified in lower grades, even a VG!

Agree. Is a 60th Anniversary really going to mean anything?
Hopefully that was an inexpensive pick up somewhere and the OP was not the one who paid for grading. Would cost less to just buy this one in a higher grade currently out on ebay.

As for the original question, I would have been wrong as I would not have guessed "straight graded" but then my record hasn't been too good lately with guessing. Seems like more IMO is getting by that I see as "Details". What can I say, I'm not a grader and have to rely on the experts...who are still human.

The grading companies are in a dilemma with coins like that where they really want to give value to the submitter, they don't want to antagonize anyone but stay true to their profession. Sometimes hard decisions are made.
I am surprised it graded with the rim damage. Personally, if I see a quarter like this, it goes into the change jar for spending later.

And we wonder why turn around times are so long…..apparently folks are now submitting their parking lot finds.
Why was it submitted?
Maybe they thought it was some type of rare or valuable error. How many times have we heard on these forums, "you guys are wrong, I know this is a doubled die"? Well, maybe somebody finally put their money where their mouth is.
No and I found one similar in the street today run over by a car.
Edited to add:
Yet I bet it would be fun to be a fly on the wall in the grading room some days, as this might have been "Pitty Graded" since it should have never been submitted
Slabbing this straight diminishes the brand.

I have a coin that came back details - Rim Damage. Obverse view shows one little nick but I've always thought the reason it graded as such was because, upon further inspection, the damage went thru the edge to the other side. Hmmm

i wouldn't straight grade it, I wouldn't pack it, I wouldn't ship it, I wouldn't take a second look at it in the parking lot.
No I would not, but then again PCGS slabs insects, so there is that.

Why was this coin submitted for grading?
Why did the Chinese bother to counterfeit the 1958 cent?
Some people do things that make no economic sense.
Why the heck did someone waste their money?

That Quarter may have a very special meaning to the submitter that we don't know about.
I can see that as one reason to understand why it was done.
But rim damage??? I don't know. No comment.

I guess it’s a VF25 C coin?
As our hosts have already graded it a moot issue for me. As far as the rim nick affecting grading will let the grading experts weigh in.
I have four grading vouchers that came with my membership and I have nothing obvious to submit. I’ve paid, but I do not want an exercise in futility. I have eight months to figure.
To me, it also depends upon the coin type and date. I don't think very common coins should have the same standard of "market acceptability" applied and I'm not saying it just because this one is a US modern. I'd say the same thing about any really common coin. When there many, many others available to be acquired at any time, I wouldn't assign a straight grade with any problem like this one.
With the Braided Hair, I'd have to see the coin but almost certainly only penalize the grade.
Good to see it was graded... otherwise I suspect I would have used it in a vending machine...if I could find one that accepts quarters.

Strange to grade pocket change.
