Which graded coin would you prefer?

Glen2022Glen2022 Posts: 948 ✭✭✭✭

All other things being equal, denomination, date, mint mark, eye appeal, etc., would you prefer a slabbed NGC MS 67 or a PCGS MS66 in an OGH (1st Gen)? Why? Would you pay more for the one you prefer? If so, by what percent?

Thanks

Lots of factors. Either scenario could be better depending on the coin.

So if it is not in the old NGC fattie holder, are you implying that you would choose the PCGS 66 in the OGH 1st gen?

Sorry don't have pictures, just trying to get some sense and comparisons of the various holders used by the TPGs.

No thats not what I am saying, but you cant compare an old PCGS holder to a new NGC holder. Old holders in general bring more money. If comparing an OGH to an NGC fattie all being equal I would take the fattie.

I need to see the coins in hand before making any judgement. I don't buy coins sight unseen.

With the stipulations in play by the OP, I'd go with the NGC MS67. Many rattlers have been cherried, so it's not like a lock the coin is an upgrade.

What are the price guide and auction information for the two (pcgs 66 vs ngc 67)? If they are $500 and $600 then I think I have one answer. If they are $500 and $6000 then I think I have another answer. Something else, then the answer may be something else.

Sure he can compare them if he wants to, especially when the comparison includes an NGC coin that grades a point higher.

If the person you're asking is a coin collector and not a slab collector, he shouldn't be able to answer your questions. It's essentially impossible that "All other things being equal,..." and since they're not, the differences should affect the answers.

It's a myth that an OGH coin will be superior. Most of the upgrades have been cracked out. There is no general answer. Would have to see the coin.

There are too many factors to be considered to give a reasoned answer, not the least of which is what does the coin look like. If you are asking which slab I would prefer if it was the same coin, that is a tougher question, but again, it would depend to me on what the coin market and auction prices said about the particular coin.

As most everyone has already mentioned, "all things" are rarely equal when comparing two different coins. I would have to see both coins in order to make a decision.

I would take the newly crossed NGC 67, send it to CAC, and then send it back to PCGS to cross it back in hopes of getting a PCGS 66+ or 67, in a nice new holder with TrueViews. Old plastic does nothing for me.

I guess the best way to answer this question would be to rephrase it-

Would you rather have a PCGS MS66 OGH or the same coin after being crossed to NGC in a new NGC MS67 holder?

At that point, which is cheaper? If they're the same price, which slab has less scratches?

Yeah, it really does come down to nitpicking at that point. As always, when the coins are different, but the better coin, as that is what the OP scenario comes to.

Not a fair comparison. Use an old NGC fatty holder if you want to make it fair.

I choose the NGC fattie with a grade of 67.

I would take the NGC 67. It’s worth more than a 66. (CPG). I dislike the OGH 1st gen as they rotate in holder.

I am not a believer in the myth OGH always superior. Real Players know u can’t make Generalizations like that in RCI. Plus Everybody knows they have been picked over for decades lol. I have had some submissions of them upgrade however none lately - this not a slam dunk. But I will certainly look at them off the bourse.

I have also had a lot of NGC fatties upgrade for me.

Not a slab collector nor player of holder game (would go broke). I have about an equal number PCGS and NGC slabs. Plus some ANACS and ICG (items under $100). It’s all in the deal for me / good auc buys, stuff offered to me at shows, etc.

Assuming the coins look the same I would take the NGC 67. I don't find that OGH's are undergraded all that often. That might be because a lot of those that were undergraded have since upgraded or they are just being held by private collectors and not reaching the market. I find NGC one-piece fatties to be among the most consistently undergraded coins. I am sure my experience is only a small sample and your mileage may vary.

I collect coins, not slabs....My decision would be based on the coin when viewed - preferably in hand, or with good pictures (and a return option). Cheers, RickO

If eye appeal and quality are the same, PCGS all day. I strongly prefer PCGS holders over any other TPG. I own a few hundred pcgs coins about about 6 NGC coins (4 are waiting for crossover/variety attribution, the other two were too inexpensive to pass up)
I feel it is a generally safe practice to deduct one grade point from NGC slabs anyway. 🤷‍♂️

My choice would be based on eye appeal!!

Well, I do not collect holders, labels, or numbers, so... as you said all else equal I would buy the cheaper of the two as my collection has never been about trying to impress, it is about my own pleasure alone. If the cheaper gives me the same pleasure as the more expensive I have money left for something else.

For a poor boy I have put together a damn fine collection with this approach.
