NewP 14-D buffalo nickel, with CHD images

Some sets are never fully done. Sometimes that must have piece comes along. This is one such piece, which fully deserved images brought to us by our own Crazy Hound Dog.

My other 14-D certainly stood the test of time, acquired back when Teletrade was a thing, made raw for an album for a number of years, then graded again when I went registry. A very nice piece in its own right, but will be replaced with this one.
My newP is in an OGH, and looks to have similarly stood the test of time in someone’s collection, having not been in a major auction since 2010. The obverse colors are truly “all that”, with the revere having very pronounced golden toning as well as blue to purple hues. My one pre-purchase hesitancy was what appeared to be a scratch in the middle of the buffalo’s body, but in my research, I found other pieces that had the exact same die features, giving me assurances it was an as-minted die crack.

Feel free to GTG and other comments are always welcome.

w/o being able to see the luster which is a big factor in 65/66 or better buffs, i'll say 64 just because of the date a slightly mushy strike.

although a nice date, mm, horn and it may be an above average strike for the date but i don't have them memorized. aside from grade, looks like a stellar coin and i like it even more OGH.

    mmmmm ... yes! <3

As @Walkerguy21D said, a genuinely scarce coin, and it looks to be in a wonderful state of preservation (near Gem/Gem). Outstanding!

No reason to think that’s not a 65.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

That is a nice Buff... Die crack on obverse, two on reverse. Looks like a 64, if luster good a 65. Cheers, RickO

Beautiful coin! I noticed a few things on the reverse that got my variety enthusiasm pumped up. I looked at variety vista and found no listed varieties of any kind. Still... a few points of interest, maybe just late die stage anomalies. A few share similar characteristics with various DDRs of other years. Like the wavy points on the top of letters in E.P.U.
That weird little gouge or bump inside the R
What appears to be a notch in the upper end of the E
    Various pointy letter tops
The extra part of the U to the right of the last U in UNUM.
The extra on the F similar to the 1963 Franklin ddr

Strike is typical for a 14-D Buff. They all look slightly mushy, and this one is no exception. With the die crack on the obverse, it would appear to be a later die state.

    Nice color. Clean fields.

    I'll go 65.

Thanks for all the great comments. There are a number of die features that make it an interesting piece for those like myself that enjoy those things. The coin is clearly later die state, and I suspect that is what drives the mushiness or appearance of DDR attributes.

For those that took a stab at grade, the piece is currently housed in an OGH with a numeric grade of 63. In hand, I don't see it having the blast for a 65, particularly on the reverse. The eye appeal is off the charts, particularly on the obverse - it is a rare breed to seem this level of eye appeal at a 63. It can easily see it as a 64. Originally I had thought about sending for regrade/reconsideration in order to get a good image. The slab itself has seen better days. But Joe did a bang up job with pics and the slab so OGH it stays!

And stating the obvious: in my limited experience, many buffs in 63 or 4 have eye appeal that equals or surpasses higher graded coins. Nice coin there, Sir!
