Upgrade candidate?

Love me the old soapbars and thinking this guy might have a shot at a crack and upgrade at our host.
What do y'all think?

Those photos could be hiding quite a bit. You may want to ask the seller for additional photos to help with your determination.

That said, the obverse looks rather clean, but there are a few small, yet rather deep contact marks below the eagle’s right wing on the reverse.

If you love the old soap bars, why would you crack it?

I can't even tell if I like the coin from those pictures, much less determine how it would grade.

Why don't you buy it and do it yourself?

That's what he was asking. I believe "this guy" refers to the coin.

Impossible to say with any certainty, but my guess is that if someone really thought it would they would have already tried.

I understood perfectly what the OP was saying. His pattern here is to post ebay links and ask opinions of the board on whether they are good buys. I interpret these posts as fishing here to guide him on ebay buying opportunities. I find it tiresome since that is all he does - look through his posting history.

The posts I’ve seen asked whether coins were counterfeit or in other instances, whether they were over-hyped in some way. I don’t recall many, if any instances in which the OP revisited and posted to a thread after forum members replied to him.

Regardless, due to the poor images, the subject coin in this thread could just as easily be a downgrade as an upgrade.

@MFeld Yes, he does that too as if ebay isn't full of overpriced/questionable coins. We can all go there to find 100s if we wish to spend our time doing so.

Buy it and let us know!

Looks to have some luster imparing haze on it so 64 seems correct.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

Luster appears subdued. I'd be surprised it was a lock upgrade why it hadn't been submitted by now.
Looks honest for an MS65. Not an MS66.
Is there a tremendous spreadsheet between the two grades to make it worthwhile?

If 64 is correct, the assigned grade is incorrect.

    About double

Pretty safe bet. Maybe I'll buy it. It's 400 in 64, 500 in 65, 930 in 66. Not much downside.

Nice big hit on the cheek, main focal area. Scribbles in front of her face. I think it has a better than good chance of downgrading. I don't see it at 65 with that cheek hit. If it were elsewhere, perhaps but it is not.

Based on the pictures - which are not conducive to grading - I would say it would downgrade at our hosts service. Cheers, RickO

    Basic thought process for OP's statements, based on other posts I have seen by them whic include asking about counterfeits, etc.;

"Love me the old soapbars" ... aka oh, man, here's a shot. Hasn't been sent in yet. Color on the rims. Somewhat clean. Surely an upgrade candidate.

"and thinking this guy might have a shot at a crack and upgrade at our host." ... supports claim above.

"What do y'all think?" ... let's see what people on the PCGS Board think the grade is, because those guys are pretty good, and I'm not sure, and I want the easy score.

    .

Sorry of this all sounds cold and callus, but if you want to play in the big fish bowl, you don't ask, you do. And you make calculated, educated guesses based on a keen eye and lots of experience or practice. Mostly this is done in person, because it is almost impossible to be right enough times based on images to come out ahead.

In other words, you ain't the only fish, guppy. Are there shots and home runs out there? For sure. But if you have to ask a public forum and there are already god-knows-how-many eyeballs out there, you're probably going to be way too late.

If I was a betting man (I'm not in this case), I've got $50. those pictures are tilted just so for a reason. Not necessarily deceptive. Just best possible light.

Just like the carnival. Spin the dial, take your chances ... fame and fortune await.

Pic appears to be a stop and a half overexposed, so I don't care what's on the plastic, I wouldn't buy it unless I had a no questions asked 7 day return privilege. As others have commented, a lot can be hidden with an overexposed pic.

Morgans generally aren't hard to grade, and it's well known that CC Morgans are looser by 1/2 to 3/4 due to bag marks. If you can't see the coin in hand, pass.

In my 20 plus years of sending coins to TPGs, I have never cracked a coin and sent it in. People I know and trust have told me too many horror stories. And I believe them. And on in holder upgrade attempts, though I have gotten at least a handful, one a big one, more often that not, I have been disappointed. That's just me.

The only thing that irks me is he seems to be looking for everybody else's opinion on upgrade candidates but shares ZERO wisdom of his own and needs others brains. He doesn't come back to visit the thread. Another poster who wants others to do his work. Pffffft.

I can't recall a single instance when the OP has actually contributed anything besides "what do you think..." questions.

Well if people don't ask questions, how are other people going to provide snarky answers?

I see it as maxed out grade wise. I would not put that in a 66 holder and with better photos I might just suggest a 64 holder.

  • al410al410 Posts: 2,402 ✭✭✭✭

Would not surprise me to see a 64 on crack out, also the holder may add some value so if it was me I would leave be. Also the pics leave many questions, I would ask for better pics before buying.

I shy away from those 7 digit serial numbers ANACS holders.
