1886-O Morgan Dollar grading results - revealed

Trueviews won't be up for a month or so, my "raw" iPhone pics will have to do! This might be tricky.
For those of you with concerns about turnaround times - this was an express submission with a 6/15 received date and I got grades last night. Maybe that is an outlier, or they are improving the express tier.
I thought they’d stick me with a 58 too but with the thought that any other common date would be called a 62. PCGS said 61.
MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

My guess is AU58, seems like slight rub besides chatter. Nice coin but weak reverse which is common for date.
wow. the quintessential coin for demonstrating N.O. weak strikes!
i call it a super-slider since these images are not easily enlargable with quality. 55 or 61.
AU58, and a nice example!
My YouTube Channel
from the pic, I'm at 58 as well

Most of these are sliders so I’ll go with 58. It is not an immediate convincing uncirculated.
I'm seeing a 58 as well.

MS-61. Nice coin!

62.

Technically I think it's as high as 62, but because it's pricey in true uncirculated condition you will get a 58. I submitted a similar coin years ago and got 58.
62
Paper money eventually returns to its intrinsic value. Zero. Voltaire. Ebay coinbowlllc

Nothing is as expensive as free money.
I'll say 62. It is definitely not AU.
I'm guessing 58
Good guesses!

Seriously, how exactly can you tell the difference between "slight wear" (which I see on both faces) and "weak strike" (which is apparently the case here)?
This should be pretty basic knowledge but I don't have it yet.
Comes from realizing where the high points of the devices are, in this case theyre in the same place Obv/rev so both competing for the same metal, and uniform luster in the fields. Silver is soft so it doesn’t just wear on the high points without losing some field luster due to friction.
As a coin circulates the luster decreases in the fields and remains in the protected areas until you get below a 45 or so. Looking for uniform luster is key. The seller thought it was AU as well.
Looks nice!
Had to go find the video. The part you are asking about starts at about 4:10. They use a really extreme example but at about 5:30 make the statement about AU to Unc.
One thing to keep in mind and this is true with most grading steps, there is not a finite line between the step. There is a grey area or could go either way area. Some graded AU58 are cracked out and then make it into an Unc. holder. Similarly some Unc. holders are cracked out and find their way into an AU holder. These are not typical but do exist. There are threads talking about this and especially with older dated material.

Good for you. Big price jump in MS. Might need to see in hand to really judge luster and any breaks. Maybe I need to break out my MS-61 86-O in an old NGC holder and submit - maybe needs a a quick bath as I assume it sat in the bag and acquired the obv toning which is slightly negative, but very original. Pretty good strike for an 86O
I thought 58 at first.... then, after reading some opinions, went back, looked again. I do see the 61 grade.... No excuses, but it may be more apparent in hand. Cheers, RickO
That looks great for a 61. Id probably do the same. Risk of it coming back lower seems minimal.
Don’t ever crack that coin out. Here is a 62 I owned. This is what an uncirculated 86-O looks like to me. 61 should look just like it with a few more trivial marks.

@JimTyler so they have to be fully struck to be UNC?
I'm not sure who Jim was referring to for not cracking out their coin.
If its not CAC try that first. 61 gold bean these days would probably get 63+ Money.

I can see 61 for that one.

Delaware Doons,
Thanks for the advice, that's good to know and no downside risk.

This is a little crazy but I checked on MS61 cac at the pcgs price realized. There were 6 that sold at the Jun 2021 Stacks auction. The price range was very tight from 1320 to 1440 and the cert numbers indicated they were probably from the same submission as they all had 413519xx (04 06 15 24 25 28). Could have been more in-between these that were different grade or not cac (as I sorted on cac). Don't know why someone would put all these in one auction. They were all on the white side (nothing ugly stained...).
