Thoughts on the 1925-D Buffalo nickel. Let's play guess the grade. It's easy and fun. GRADE REVIELED

This is an older addition to my collection and every time I look at it, I get inspired to hit another coin show. So, if you feel like playing along, test your grading skills out here on this one. :):)
Thanks for looking and playing along.
Happy hunting, Joe

I found this coin at the FUN show a couple of years back. I remember seeing it through the glass but couldn't believe my eyes about the grade so I asked to see it in hand. Once I got it in hand I still couldn't believe the grade and continued to look at it even harder. To this day I can't understand what happened when they graded this coin. I see it as a 64 and maybe a plus every time I look at it and hand. So, everyone that graded this coin 64-65, I'm in agreement. As for the line Mr. Feld mentioned I never noticed until you pointed it out. With that said I think it needs to be the size of a dinner plate for me to see it and I'll bet you that if I moved my lights it wouldn't appear in the image, it's that subtle. One day I will resubmit this Buff but for now it's fun to see it this way. The best part is I purchased it for less than 62 money. I walked away a happy man that day.
Thank you all for chiming in and playing along.
Happy hunting and be safe out there,
Joe

    I'll guess MS64. Nice Buffalo!

65 at least. That coin has to be in the upper 5% for strike on 1925-D.

That date always has weakness somewhere, and the Hub wasn't super detailed from the start, and the first 2 numbers in the date are weak on all coins for the year.

That's one of the few examples of a coin that shows strike and quality.

That is one well struck 25D, Joe. Gotta be a 65+. What's going on behind the Buff's left front leg and rimside tail? Die Clash maybe? Beauty.

Not at all sure what you’re referring to. Can you be more specific?

Beautiful! MS64... maybe the hit on the nostril keeps it from 65

They kinda look like some kind of defect on the planchet before it was struck. That’s all I have for you. I should mention those marks in no way that I can see could effect the grade. I never even noticed them until you pointed them out. You really get in there, Jim😊

Is the (essentially) vertical scratch at the central portion of the upper half of the picture on the coin or the holder?

First thing I saw and may be the difference between a 4 and a 5. Still, I'm going with 64.

It’s a very light mark on the coin. In fact it’s so light I didn’t even notice it until you pointed it out.

I'm sure this is nitpicking due to not being able to see the coin in hand but are there hairlines? I think I see them in the obverse hair and Buffalo on reverse. Also, is it rub on the Buff's hip or is that just the photo lighting? If there is some rub I'd have to go 64.

You say (Rub) as in wear? There is no wear or rub on this piece. There are no hair lines, as in cleaned. It is an MS grade.

A little soft on LIBERTY, !9 of the date, braid; tail and shoulder. Solid MS 64. In time+. Very nice coin.

  • ad4400ad4400 Posts: 2,121 ✭✭✭✭✭

I’m confident in a 65. This date is notoriously difficult to find with good stike and anything approaching eye appeal. A few scattered dings aside, this is in the upper echelons for this date and MM

i'm not a fan of indians with nose rings, so i'll wag 64+. i would go 65 but there are some scuffs/marks, although many coins as of late have seemed to grade high despite the very thing that should limit grade, contact marks.

    nice denver buff either way!

I had the same experience with an ngc pr62 buffalo nickel, that for all the world looks like a nice 64+ coin.
cannot fathom what the graders were thinking about. Maybe the label was just a typo!

I would send it there in a heart beat. Sure had me fooled. Nobody is perfect. Some very knowledgeable people looked with the lowest GTG of 64. Yes, I would send it. A gold sticker might make it look better. Actually, what did you think, Joe?

I see it as a 64 or maybe a tad higher. I picked it up for less than 62 money so I feel fortunate.

Late to the game... However, I would have been in the 64 camp as well....Nice Buff and should be regraded - or get direct feedback on why it is not a higher grade. Cheers, RickO

  • cameonut2011cameonut2011 Posts: 10,169 ✭✭✭✭✭

My guess is that it is netgraded as a 62 for the reasons alluded to by @MarkFeld. If barely visible in hand, a regrade may be in order. Net grading is very subjective for something like this and you might see a range of grades and decent grade swings. It wasn’t for a scratch, but I had a coin go from UNC details to MS66. It happens.

Looks like a poster-child for @Catbert 's "Are MS62 coins unloved?" thread ... Beautiful coin no matter what number resides an inch above it ...

If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.
