What caused this strike - 10c 1798
So this is the last photo from my previous thread on die crack.
However, hear I am wondering what caused this coin to be struck with the letters and stars to be 'wide' and/or flat. Most evident on the letter Y and adjacent star (8). Also the 12th star.
From the other thread the coins were well struck until this last one. Even the other example with similar full die cracks shown at bottom. I suspect it has something to do with the die failing and being less stiff and possible movement under striking pressure. But just guessing at it. Anyone know what might cause this or thoughts?

Similar die cracks but not as pronounced. More typical striking of others.

Could be a number of things - dies becoming weaker and therefore having trouble, a harder planchet, a slightly thicker planchet, poor die spacing, insufficient pressure...
There's no way to tell for sure.

Thanks. While all those things could cause a weaker strike, what I am wondering about is most easily seen in the letter Y. It is much 'wider' than normal and I just don't see this as a weaker strike only thing. But then I don't know and why I am asking.
I just noticed in the blow up that the wider Y absorbs the die crack. That is the die crack goes through the Y. In the others the die crack is between the T and the Y. Also can see how much closer the top of the Y is to the T.

It’s most likely a harder planchet. It was likely slightly less annealed and therefore the dies would affect it less under the same pressure. This is for the whole coin and explains the stars.
The Y looks like the inside section of the Y leading to the crack gave way. That would be a nice section missing that just so happens to make it look wider. It looks like you posted this above me so you have the right idea. I didn’t notice it at first either, it’s a pretty tricky crack. Good eye!

It appears the die crack grew to merge with the letter Y, thus the appearance. Cheers, RickO
I would venture to say perhaps the die was about to break and expanding when the coin was struck.
Yours appears to be a later die state. I love your dime!

Good example of a die wearing out.
You are seeing the effect of the die crack adding material to the Y.
