New purchase CBH 1818 O-108 “Pincher 8s”

Recently picked this up, has great luster and I love the Pinchers at the top of the 8’s in 1818. I never get tired of the varieties found in Capped Bust Halves!

Is this not called "Lobster Claw" anymore?!
My current "Box of 20"
Nice pinchers! Nice look to her.
It is listed in the AMBPR as Pincher 8’s.
Oh my god Herb ... that's funny!
I just got one too. It actually arrived today!!
Can I share? Some scratches on the slab I haven't been able to get rid of yet.

I truly like that coin. Great pickup, congrats.

OK guys. Those of you who can see your edges need to look. This is the ONLY die marriage that may exhibit an inverted Castaing machine die where each half of the edge lettering is inverted in relation to the other. A rather scarce abnormality.

The more the merrier! I am not sure how many forum members appreciate the varieties in the Capped Bust Family….there are some really unique coins within the series!
That's a cool coin, man! I really like it
I will have to wait to check mine after I have it crossed over to PCGS and can get a look at the edge.
I like the coin a lot too, but I love that old ANACS holder!
Indeed it is. Good info.
I did already ... as much as I could see. Mine has some edge anomaly's (looks like the Castaing machine tried to mangle it in a couple of spots) but all the letters face the same way, and "normal" orientation (reading R to L, looking at a tilt from the obverse side).
Thanks Herb ... didn't want to hijack your thread! I know there are some of us that absolutely appreciate the different die marriages, states and varieties. How many is hard to tell, but at least a dozen I can think of who post at least occasionally. There's probably double that number here, easily.

Here is some info from book:
The Pincher 8's variety received this nickname (also known as Lobster Claw and Broken 8's) because the date displays both 8's with an opening a the top.
A question that immediately surfaces is why were the 8'a left open at the top?....
later states - In my opinion apparently the defective 8's simply were not noticed at the time.....
Concludes:
Actually the open 8's were due to a broken punch problem that was not immediately considered important enough to have gone through the trouble to correct. Later usage of this 8 punch on other varieties shows that the problem was corrected by engraving (thereby completing) the upper loop of the 8 figure.

Your 50 looks like it is about to fall off the coin.

It does look like that! 🤓
And that makes it even more perfect, for me at least. Seems like I'm always hanging on by a thread!

A very fun variety. Nice choices, Herb and Todd.
I'd give a hard look at the edges but mine is an older holder which hides them. Interesting info, Brad!
Lance.
I like your coin! MS62?
@Herb_T... That is a very nice coin.... While I am not a collector of these (not a series or a focus), that is one that would catch my attention at a show. Cheers, RickO
Very cool coin, thanks for sharing.

No. Just an AU50 but with nice luster and color. In an older holder. Might grade a tad higher today.
