A very used, and slightly, abused 1821 Large Cent...

lkeneficlkenefic Posts: 7,916 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'll definitely be upgrading this piece in the future and I'm glad I didn't spend a lot on it, but this one didn't seem as dark and problematic as many others I've seen. I noted the filing marks on the rim under the date... looks like someone filed three notches in the rim a long time ago.

I'm seeing G4 details with a bit of dirt and rim damage. Thoughts and comments welcomed...

G-6 I like the surface quality. I think those rim notches are very minor.

It is a pleasing coin. Dirt around the devices suggests an old cleaning but this one has certainly re-patinated since then. I agree with G-6.

Very nice planchet for a ‘21, and overall a great choice for this lower mintage issue for a budget date set.

Good question... I'll see if I can't get better images but I don't see anything "in hand" that would suggest a die chip. There are definite tool marks where someone filed off some copper. This doesn't make sense to me... that someone would be collecting copper this way... more often seen on silver, and especially gold... but seems like a LOT of work for very little return.

The rim bumps don’t bother me much and while it isn’t high grade it’s an otherwise wonderfully wholesome good, which isn’t common for the type. I’d be delighted to have it in an album

Relatively smooth, natural surfaces on a lower grade large cent are always a huge plus. Your coin sort of has a worked on, recolored, or cleaned vibe to it, thought it's hard to say from the pics. All in all, not bad for a budget coin. Newcomb 2, by the way.

Well it is a large cent! It has a rather nice appeal to it. Definitely had a older cleaning at some point

Perhaps they want you to spend it in hopes of finding it.

It's a very nice Good and great album coin. This is about as nice as you will find for a piece in this grade.
