New Capped Bust with color, in the opposite color holder

pursuitoflibertypursuitofliberty Posts: 7,102 ✭✭✭✭✭

Since I could not do the lot viewing in person, and didn't ask for representation, this was, in a sense, somewhat of a gamble. Although I was sure this would be a good coin, I wasn't quite sure how good.

Also, while I have more trust, overall, in our host ... the numismatic world should be "Buy the coin, not the holder", right?

One more thing ... I am not a fan of the Stack's model, so when I do go after something there, I bid early and lose a lot. Their live auctions need a LOT of work IMO, and just don't work for me. @Pnies20 might be able to go on for quite a while about that. >:)

Anyway, she arrived today ... and I am very pleased that I placed a strong bid on this and that my price held.

Great russet brown and golds with some magenta and blues over really nice luster and surfaces.

Feel free to guess the grade or offer any comments.

Happy Friday!! :)

    Lance.

As has been the case at least a few times previously, my guess is higher than Lance’s. I think the coin is a solid 20.

    😉

    Gorgeous!

Certainly is a very nice coin.... Looks like the lowball guesses already have it... :D Cheers, RickO

Beautiful. I’ll go with AU58+ CAC.

Yeah, now that I've seen Lance's grade I took another look and noticed a few things.. the denticles above the cap are barely formed, one of the talons is not well struck and I'm not sure I'm OK with that smart aleccy grin on her face.

    Great toning. I'll guess VF30.

Better date. Out of parallel dies. Need to look at the coin for luster breaks and to Overton to identify variety and what did not strike up fully on Unc. examples of said variety. Except for hit between star 2 and Miss Liberty's neck, exceptionally clean surfaces.

The only issue I have, and it could be just the lighting, is the coin's color. Cobalt blue toning is fine. So is slate gray, russet and gold toning. Light purple toning on silver is not. Since I have not physically seen the coin, I don't know if my comments in this paragraph are on point or not.

Interesting observations, thank you! The attribution is a 12-103 (103.2), and the weakness on the right stars is fairly typical, although I have seen it change from stronger to weaker in a top to bottom orientation on different examples. The same is true on the reverse, I have seen stronger and weaker points, but so far I haven't seen one that is fully struck throughout.

As far as the color I think it's the lighting. I'm still trying to perfect that. It's a little darker in hand. Not really purple so much as some blues and deeper browns in the same area.

Here’s a nice example that CRO sold some time ago with nice purple toning.

Todd, if the colors are blues and browns, you have a nice coin, irrespective of its grade. Purple, especially light purple is an easy color for a chemist to create.

Very nice, congrats! I own a VF25 so I will confidently state it is graded higher than mine.
