The 1870-S $3.00 gold should bring a fortune!
Your hobby is supposed to be your therapy, not the reason you need it.
I wonder if this outcome is what Harry Bass wanted when he considered donating his many thoughtfully archived treasures to THE ANA Museum ? Epic treasures donated and then sold off years later to just recover overhead expenses. As I grow older I wonder what to do with heirlooms. Maybe they all could go to an ANA museum exhibit for just a brief moment in time & then be cashed out to cover ANA's annual expenses. Where should your heirlooms go ? Why do you collect ?
The core collection was not donated to the ANA. The coins were donated to the Harry Bass Foundation, and the HBF loaned the coins to the ANA for the last ~20 years. I think most assumed that the coins would eventually be returned to collectors -- where they belong, IMO -- it was just a matter of when.
The regular issue material is superb, fantastic.
A few of the patterns give me goosebumps. The double eagle 1850 no date, wow..... how can you top the significance.
Shhhh. Don't tell any more people.
It was just in the Dallas Morning News and MSN.com today:

Steve
Where will it rank among ultra rarities like the 1933 DE, 1794 plugged dollar, Stickney Brasher Doubloon and others?
I am anxiously waiting to see what will be in the sale, and when the sale will be. I'm hoping there will be something "affordable" in there for me.
Assuming the coins listed here will be it; [I tried to post a link but got a message that my comment needed to be approved - just google Harry Bass Foundation Coins]
Huge price differences between grades for early gold. What holders will they end up in?

About the coins, from the press release quoted above
I checked the Heritage upcoming auction calendar, and while they have some things posted well into next year, this is not yet scheduled. I can't imagine how much effort would need to go into preparing for this. Years?
This thread needs a Bass coin! A newp for me, p55
I don’t know, something sounds “fishy” to me about this Bass auction! lol
Steve
Edited to add quotes around the word “fishy”, and also added “lol” to make it clear my comment was intended to be humorous.
My collecting “Pride & Joy” is my PCGS Registry Dansco 7070 Set:

For whatever reason the 1870-S $3.00 gold has never really achieved the ultimate mega rarity status IMO like some other coins such as 1804 dollars, 1913 Liberty nickels, 1822 $5.00 gold, 1933 St. Gaudens, the Judd-1776 pattern, Brasher Doubloons, etc. I'm not really sure why as the 1870-S is the ultimate rarity with only 1 known and has a cool story to go with it.
Your hobby is supposed to be your therapy, not the reason you need it.
I agree and I don't know the answer.
Hopefully this time it reaches for the stars!
Nope. I love nice gold, but just about everything in that sale will be unaffordable. If there were a 1907-D half eagle in MS-64 (It’s a common coin.) at least a couple of jokers will bid it up to at least twice what it’s worth just to have a souvenir from the event.
This sale will not alter my numismatic financial planning in the least because buying anything at a fair price will be impossible. For those are old enough, remember the Garrett Sales? Those who stayed on the sidelines made out best.
Before you wax too poetic about this coin, remember that it is a formerly mounted jewelry piece that is polished and has a date scratched in on the reverse. Rare it is; beautiful it isn’t.
The ANA handled this correctly. They displayed the coins to the public as it should be. I hate the way other museums, like the Smithsonian, lock their material in vaults were no one, except the insiders, get to see. Given that fact that public tax dollars paid for part of what the Smithsonian has, the pictures of those coins, at least, should be in the public domain. As a public speaker, it would be great if I could use some of those pictures for a presentation now and then.
And give credit where it’s due. Given proper citations, Heritage lets the public use their photos.
Time has come, starting now..................out of my league for sure, but enjoy some real stunners up for auction.
Fun to watch this one.

1877 Half Union in Copper
Judd-1547, PR66 Red and Brown
Spectacular Rarity of the Highest Order
John J. Pittman used to put some of his collection in a non-competitive exhibit case at the ANA Convention with a printed silk ribbon that just said "Selected Numismatic Rarities." One year there were TWO bronze Half Unions so we could see obverse and reverse (I just assumed they were the two different obverse varieties).
Another year there were several different Proof sets from the 1840s in their original leather cases.
For those who enjoy Mike Sadler, auctioneer extraordinaire.
Here he is interviewing Todd Imhof, Exec. VP of Heritage.
Thanks for posting this video @Goldbully
I really enjoy the Central States coin show and will be there again in 2024.

Purchased by my former employer, Harlan J. Berk, Ltd., for a client.
That's a big sale, best executed by a major reputable dealer.
You were no doubt an asset while you were employed there.
