Good - Boston points spread around evenly - Butler held in check!

    Congrats to the Celtics.

Looking forward to the finals. If my memory is correct the Celtics and Warriors last played for a title in 1964.

  • erikthredderikthredd Posts: 9,006 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm looking forward to seeing how Boston tries defending Steph & Klay. Thats gonna be a totally different challenge than it was trying to stop Butler & Bam.

Congratulations guys on the Celtics making it to the Finals, I'll be rooting for you, go Celtics!

i turned the game off around the 3:30 mark in the 4th with Boston up by 13, only to have my eyes bug out when i hopped on the net later and saw 'Butler misses shot to take lead with 16 seconds remaining'

the Heat do not possess the firepower that the Warriors do, thus the Celtics must really guard against lapses of that nature in the finals

had Butler hit that shot and the outcome of that game been different, a defibrillator would have been put to use for a couple of guys in this thread

you'll never be able to outrun a bad diet

Should be a great finals. Plus all the games are on ABC so I'll be able to watch them. :)

I agree that Miami doesn't possess the firepower that GS (on offense) has but flip that and I think the same can be said for GS not possessing the firepower that Miami has (on defense) even though they were ranked pretty high on team defense this year.
Where the Heat have Butler,Bam,Lowry,Tucker & Oladipo that can all lock you down on that side of the ball and grind games out, GS has Draymond, whose as good as it gets on defense, but then really just Gary Payton Jr and Andrew Wiggins after that and I'm not sure I'd put those two on the same level as some of the Heat defenders.

I think this series will really come down to can Boston's defense, that is great at shutting down the opposing team's three point shooting, stop/slow down the Warriors great shooting offense?
Miami led the NBA in three point percentage this season at 37.9% from three,Boston held them to just 30.0% in this series. Part of that drop was due to no Tyler Herro for three of the games but when he was playing and healthy his percentage was down as well.
    Regular season/This series
    Strus 41%/29%
    Robinson 37%/29%
    Lowry 37%/26%
    Herro 39%/37%
The only players that saw their percentage go up were Butler who went from a very mediocre 23% to 29%. PJ Tucker shot close to his average but part of that might have been due to Robert Williams sagging off him at times to help contest in the paint.

This can ultimately be the key to beating GS or it can all mean nothing, time will tell but from a Boston perspective I honestly like their chances. Hopefully we get a great injury free series and the better team wins.

I'm not gonna lie, my stomach was a knot of nervous energy last night but that all started long before that late Miami run so I probably didn't feel it as much as others lol.

I liked BC in the game 7. Just a gut feeling. Had them in my 3 way parlay. Had Mito in golf for top 10 finish. He delivered. Other third of parlay,Bell in Coke 600 for top 3 finish, finished 5th. let me down. That said I like Boston in 6. Strictly a gut feeling as I had in game 7. I'd like to see GS win, but from a gut betting standpoint I'll go with BC. So in a sense either way I win, and lose. :/

The GSW defense is much better than it is given credit for. When GSW has an off night shooting from 3 point range its defense has been the factor that allows it to win games.

Since Curry, Thompson and Green have been playing together in the playoffs, with all three being healthy the defense has been very good in most games.

Should be an entertaining series to watch.

    Predictions for Game 1?

  • thisistheshowthisistheshow Posts: 9,386 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm predicting Celtics in 6 or less. So I'll take the Celtics game 1.

  • erikthredderikthredd Posts: 9,006 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'll probably go with GS tonight unless Robert Williams is able to come out and play somewhere close to 80-90%,its tough to predict how his minutes will play out. I do think this series is going the distance though and I do like the C's chances but it won't be a cakewalk either way.

GS is gonna get their 3's - Boston has to prevent the easy layups tonight to have a chance!

OK - so I'm by myself tonight - Hey Self - what do you think about Curry getting 21 in the first and ZERO in the second - HMMMMMMMM - I think NBA told him to tone it down so they would have a better viewer audience in the second half!

I'm here. And I am unsure about your theory. Either way, just know you are not alone.

I'm enjoying the game. I'm on the record as Celtics in 6. I like what I see from Boston win or lose tonight, and I feel confident that if they lose they win game 2 for sure.

I don't like the way Tatum just disappears for such huge stretches.

  • erikthredderikthredd Posts: 9,006 ✭✭✭✭✭

Great win to start this series especially when your best player goes 3-17 from the field for 12 total points yet you still win by double digits. Still a long way to go imo.

  • thisistheshowthisistheshow Posts: 9,386 ✭✭✭✭✭

Celtics are in a great position to go up 2-0. Yes, the Warriors will be super motivated next game. And yes, we will not shoot as well. But neither will Curry. And Tatum can only play better...

  • erikthredderikthredd Posts: 9,006 ✭✭✭✭✭

He missed quite a few good looks from deep but he still was a force in this game with his passing and defense.

Ultimately, they beat GS at their own game by moving the ball (33 assists) hitting their threes (21-41) and locking down on defense when they needed to (holding the Dubs to 17 in the fourth and just 2-8 from three after heading into the quarter down 12.)
Steph started out like gangbusters with 21pts on 7/7 shooting/6-6 from three in the first and then was pretty much held in check for the rest of the game after that (5-18 overall/1-8 from three and just 4 points in the 4th.)

It only counts for one win but the C's have to be feeling real good right now.

@galaxy27 I have to admit that @erikthredd gave you great breakdown. I took the easy way out with the 4th qtr highlights.

The C's started nervously in my opinion. Warriors were confident and comfortable. Record 1st quarter from Curry. But I do think we are the better team, despite having so much less experience.

A very entertaining and exciting game. The Celtics 4th quarter was a clinic.

I hope the series goes 7 games, with everyone a nail biter.

If it ended with a Celtics victory in game 7, yes. If not, Celtics in 6 (or less)

A great run by BC at the end. Surprised GSW went so cold at the end. Dray was gassed at the end.

I like several players on both teams, personally collect their cards and this finals is one I want to enjoy for as long as possible. Sorry to the die hard C or Dubs fans that might have heart conditions if that happens! o:) I think it has potential to be one of those "best ever" if game 1 is any indication. I would love to see Boston win it in dramatic fashion in a game 7 buzzer beater. Hey, It could happen! ;)

  • erikthredderikthredd Posts: 9,006 ✭✭✭✭✭

Here's a pretty accurate breakdown of why Boston was able to hit as many wide open threes as they did especially late in that game. Does Green keep leaving shooters alone so he can crowd the paint on D and rebound or does he close out on his man? This might be the most important adjustment going into game 2 for GS and if he does go out to defend the three can Boston then start attacking the rim at a quicker pace?

While I'm still going with Boston for the series I'll probably go with GS tonight if they come out and play their game for a full 48mins. I do think that Timelord is still a key for Boston in keeping GS out of the paint and while he didn't play the 30ish mins I was hoping for in game 1 he was very active on defense which they'll need again.

If Boston is able to win tonight then they'd tie the 94-95 Rockets record for the most road playoff wins in a season with 9.

I took some some to read through different back and forth discussions amongst Warriors fans regarding this matter. And they seemed torn. Sone felt as though Green was following the plan, "playing center field", and that they should stick with it under the assumption that the C's will for sure cool off from deep. Some felt as though they should adjust the plan. And others felt as though Green was following the plan but not quite, allowing extra room. And they felt his Podcast work was evidence of his lack of focus. They all seemed to find evidence in similar video breakdowns supporting their individual theories.

I spent a few days last week interacting with GS fans on a couple different sites away from here and not many were taking Boston seriously. Sure Al,Smart & White hit their threes but Tatum,Brown & Grant Williams didn't and it could easily be them doing it in game two.
I'm not worried about our guys hitting their threes especially if they're left wide open, this series will come down to our defense shutting down their shooters or try to at least hold them in check. One guy who didn't get much credit was Tatum's defense on Curry in that second half, Payton Pritchard was another. He played 8 of the 12 fourth quarter minutes and more than held his own against Curry & Poole when momentum shifted. He's also another guy that is capable of getting hot from three too.

tonight was a very very physical game. i wasn't aware you can lay on the ball handler while he's dribbling like curry has done all night. green sets about 30 or 40 moving screens. but the nba couldn't let boston win two in golden state. thats why i bet on the warriors, too easy.

Work hard and you will succeed!!

six minutes left . down over 20. not a good game for us. game 3 feels like a must win

I had a feeling that tonight the Celtics would have to play perfect basketball to win. And they obviously didn't do that.

Tough to stay ahead of a team when its 5 vs 8 out there. Give GS credit for blowing it open in the third even though the refs kept them in the game in that 1st half especially when they were missing so many wide open layups. I think the biggest joke about this game is that Draymond will end this game with just two fouls called against him. I was honestly expecting this type of game called in game 1 but it ended up being tonight instead.

All in all, Boston did their job though by splitting these two games so go home and come out fresh on wednesday. I have faith Udoka will have these guys ready.

You're probably right. I came into the series expecting a split at GS, a split in Boston and whoever makes the necessary adjustments from that point forward will likely win. Its tough to say either team has a clear advantage right now with how each team played in both games. We will see though if Boston can keep their streak of not losing back to back games in these playoffs going.

Hopefully the teams will split games 3 and 4 in Boston as that will make it more likely the series goes 7 games

If this happens, and it goes to game 7, I don't like the Celtics chances. I see them winning it if it's 6 games or less.
