I saw his 1840 at Dalton. It is far, far better than the photos. It is a very nice coin! I think it is even undergraded. Good to see you- Darrell.

You are making very fast progress. Three coins in six days in a very tough series is impressive @amwldcoin. I like the 53. That is a very tough year to find nice.

I passed on a coin that shocked me today. If I could've bought it cheap enough where I felt I could sell it I might've bought it. Seeing as how the greysheet went up 3 grand recently it was a non-starter.

The coin? 1872-CC PCGS AU55. Pl with golden toning. The problem? A lavender-grey spot a little bigger than a pencil eraser to the right of the date in the field. Even worse, under the spot it was obviously repaired in a problem-free holder! :o

How about if I laugh at you instead! Aside from that might strain my budget a bit, I've exhausted about everywhere I know to look finding these. I do have a toughie coming that hopefully will be a jaw dropper! Was looking for an XF on this one and an AU presented itself.

@amwldcoin - I would like to hear more details about each acquisition as they come. Thought process on why you chose the coin, How you think you made out on each acquisition monetarily, How you think the coin stacks up against others you have seen, how you found the coin, any other cool information you could share would be great. It’s nice to watch collections get built piece by piece but a little more information would really add a lot of enjoyment.

I'm surprised you found any much less 4 of them. It took me about a year to find one for my Dansco 7070 type set
Just looked US Coins has a few in stock, certified and raw

LOL on the 1863...I had to think for a minute..as I don't have one. I posted that con for @HoledandCreative as he is building a holed set!

Here’s one I’m sending back. I just like evenly toned coins. The white area in a circle about the size of a nickel on the obv. is a little more pronounced than my picture. It’s very mark free for a 59-O and I may regret it. But it’s a bit pricey for a common date.

Curious, Do you have a specific grade that you would buy on these, or a range?

I'm doing XF-AU buy would probably buy the right 35 that might happen to present itself. I don't mind upgrading!

These are big beautiful coins that are fantastic to look at and admire. I began my collection via acquisition of a 50-O from Teletrade in 2010. Your efficiency in building the collection is commendable.
As Crusty stated, the 53 is tough and yours is very nice. Your 50-O has great eye appeal. I also like your 1840.
Congratulations and welcome to this wonderful series. These are majestic coins.

That is a very 72-S. Very tough date in the series to find in quality. Would call that an AU 55.

  • CrustyCrusty Posts: 1,129 ✭✭✭✭✭

I wasn’t expecting to see a 72s $ so soon into the set build. Especially an AU. I know this coin well and your pics don’t do this coin justice. It will be very tough to get a better example. This is a date that comes crappy…

Yeah, I hesitated because of the price, but agree about finding a nice one! I'm using my cellphone to take the pics...it does pretty good but had trouble with this one. I'm so glad JA didn't like this coin because of the small grease strike through on the Reverse!!!! :o:#:o

Our opinion on CAC could not be farther apart. And I don’t want to clog up your SLD thread with CAC arguments because watching a set of SLDs get built is such an awesome experience. But I will say this… be very careful paying "up” for non CAC SLDs. In general… They are harder to sell and it’s not easy to get your premium paid back. Especially if you run into the SLD snake. He will happily sell you CAC rejected coins for what CAC coins should bring or more! If this coin could talk she would tell you more…

The coin is a nice coin that failed many times at CAC. Doesn’t mean it’s not worthy of owning. you should be proud to own it. Just be careful paying up!

Let's see your 72-S. Is it CAC? Just curious if you have or are able to come up with a 72-S this nice. A lack of a green football is not going to stop me from buying a coin I like!

My 72s is a pcgs VF30 it’s OGH and approved by CAC so it has the bells and whistles. It took me 9 months to make the deal happen. Don’t have pics handy…. But I’ll share with you next time she is home for a visit.

Edited to add… I owned your AU53 at the same time I owned my current set piece. This was back when I was crazy and building multiple sets. I’m not talking bad about your coin. I loved it and sent it to CAC knowing it was rejected several times before. I thought it deserved it. But that doesn’t change the market for non cac SLDs…

I don't think it will be too much easier if at all as I'm not planning on buying crap...although I do have a tougher one on the way I figure I won't like...but the price was right and it will be replaced if I don't like it.

Most likely temporarily. From the pictures it could go either way...think overlit washed out pictures which may be hiding a nice coin or a dipped out typical Seated Dollar. The co. couldn't find the coin to describe to me so after a day I figured what the H! I ordered it online and the coin was found. Head Scratcher!
