When the temperature gets above a certain level it will do that. Car, lamps, storage location .... I am not sure what that temperature is? near 150 degrees F?
The first time I saw something like this was in the late 1990s when I had a table at the Ukrainian Cultural Center for the GSNA show and one of the dealer forgot about a box of slabs in his car in the morning and when he went to retrieve them later that afternoon some of the slabs had already melted like yours.
I’ve done this when I forgot & left a coin under two big halogens when photographing it. Fortunately it was only a generic gold coin and the buyer didn’t seem to mind. It doesn’t take very long -- 4 or 5 minutes will do it with the lights I use.
Just happened to notice on the COA of the 2022 AGE the mint suggestion of keeping coins in a cool dry place.
Cause for a class action lawsuit because they did not specify it earlier?
I wonder what happens if you put a slab in a microwave? I am not going to experiment with that.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Well, better the slab left in the car than a dog or child that you hear a lot about.
Yeah, if you left the slab in a dog or child, it can be very hard to retrieve.
(Unless you left it in a Slabrador retriever)

A long, long, time ago I put a Wendy's hamburg in the micro. to reheat it. Did not realize the wrapper had a thin layer of foil in it. I had arcing lightning in the oven.

Yes
It looks toned
Is it?
I know cars can get hot,,,but I would think it would take more heat to do that,,,,but I may be wrong,
perhaps under a halogen lamp?

Bizarre change-- I wonder if chemical or gas exposure could have done this. Interesting to see what PCGS would say about the cause....
ouch that looks painful, hope the coin isn't damaged in any way, looks like a tight squeeze.
I have seen melted rings like this before and it was attributed to being left under a lamp too long, for photographs or some other heat source too long. Is the label faded just a tiny bit?
I posted a thread about it a while back https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/977776/weirdest-pcgs-slab-ill-you-mine-if-you-show-me-yours

As a kid, woke up one morning to find all our vinyl records sagging/melted. Culprit: wood stove at approx. 6 ft distance.

New Jelly slab.
Hoard the keys.
Actually a really nice toning on it!

No fading on the label, totally normal there, it's just the gasket that's messed up.

Looks like a liquid in the slab.

I would send it in to have a new slab.... Should be just a minor fee. Cheers, RickO

That's how you can tell if a coin is stolen. You know, because it is "hot."
It turns into a trip to the store to buy a new microwave.

My thoughts were with or without the coin. Without, little meltage
with, mini fireworks display 😉
