Totally Inadequate Long Beach Show report

JW77JW77 Posts: 567 ✭✭✭✭✭

12 hour drive split over 2 days and i was promptly at early bird regisgtration for Wednesday dealer days. I took advantage of our host's free admission offer for registry participants. The show opened up to collectors at 2;00 PM. The stamp and collectible sections appeared fairly small, but most of the key coin dealers were present and had busy tables all day. I spent the first 2 hours on the sell side abreaking up my Peace Dollar collection and was happy with the results. Most of the collection went to a fellow forum member. The balance and a few odds and ends were sold to dealers. Thanks to the meterioc rise in prices, i ended up in the plus on all those transactions in the aggregate ( a first for me). Even profited on sales to dealers. After my pockets were bulging with cash i piveted to buy mode just looking for coins i like without focusing on trying to fill a particular registry. I guess just call it a new Type set. As the title to the discussion indicates, i was so busy i forgot to take any pictures of the bourse. However, follwing is a picture of a very nice 1936 Norfolk MS68 silver commemorative that i purchased.

i made a few other purchases, but do not have pictures as of yet. The bourse closed at 6:30 and i was there to the end. Thursday morning i did the 12 hour drive home . I ended up with a little more cash then i left with which kept me in good graces with my better half!

Congrats on your profits, long drive but it sounds like it was worth the trip. Very attractive commemorative. :)

Beautiful Norfolk, maybe as nice as I have ever seen a photo of. Congrats on a great trip.

Thanks for the report and that Norfolk is high quality. I looked for one of those for a while (Norfolk = Navy) but got discouraged... Most were tarnished and all were overpriced. I wanted one raw, most are in slabs. Cheers, RickO

thanks for the comments, I look forward to doing more "inadequate reports" in the future! The other posts from the show took a lot of effort and were amazing. As far as the coin goes, I know i overpaid for this one, but i just loved the toning and it was the nicest Norfolk i ever saw, and i am super picky. If my expectation was to sell it for a profit down the road i already lost: however, i bought it because i enjoy it. I always tell my kids better to overpay for something you really like instead of trying to save a few dollars and get something that you will regret down the road. Of course that strategy when it comes to collecting still has to be in the context of using common sense and staying within a budget that makes sense.

    Thanks for the show update.
Nice pick up on the MS68 Norfolk commemorative.
It is always nice to return home with more than you left with and a new member for your collection.

    Gorgeous Norfolk! Just stunning!! <3

I'm sure that made the drive home a lot nicer, knowing you not only had a good show on the selling side, but also acquired a magnificent coin to keep.

    Thanks for sharing!

On that first day Wednesday it was still a coin show
On the next few days there was a stampede of PSA collectors filling up the back of the Bourse
With very long lines of PSA card submitters, . They need their own show.
The lines were so long they were blocking some coin dealer tables to their frustration.
I missed one dealers table I wanted to see. Because I could not see him because he was blocked by the long line. UGH!

So true, one of the benefits of getting there for dealer days is the space to view all the available inventory, and to your point, also avoiding the sports collectible crowd. I have also found some of the better stuff at resaonable market prices tends to disappear pretty early.

NGC / PMG were not at the show this time. I hope they were not uninvited,
    Because they are competitors?
Many many NGC coins on the bourse.
Also a number of dealers i frequent were not there. Many newer dealers

I had a great trip to Long Beach. I was able to quickly sell three coins to a friend, which provided me with funds to purchase a couple of coins at the show. I was also able to have extended visits with David McCarthy, Doug Winter, Van Simmons, Andy Wedding, and others. Had a great dinner at Saville with an old friend, had breakfast on Thursday and Friday with a newer friend that I do lots of business with.

The coin highlights that I saw:

    • 1849 Mormon $20 (two different ones)
    • 1849 Oregon $10 (P20 CAC)
    • 1874 10c AU55 CAC from the Rian’s bequest set
    • Lots of other tremendous territorial coins
    • Highlights of the Hendrick’s set

    My purchases:

    • 1877 CC $5 in P55 with beautiful surfaces (off to CAC soon)
    • 1873 CC $20 in P45 (just graded by PCGS that day, off to CAC soon)
    • 1922 peace dollar with a Lady Luck casino sticker on it

Made it home Friday at 8:00pm, and my wife surprised me with a 5lb. lamb shank and mashed potatoes. We will be eating lamb for a week.
