Got a huge surprise at the local B&M today!

Finally got the opportunity to venture up to the local shop today as they have drastically changed their hours with the pandemic. I was the only person in the store, so we got to talking about toners and he pulled out a coin that he purchased RAW. He sent it to get graded along with a host of other raw coins that were previously stored in old Wayte Raymond albums. My jaw dropped when he pulled this beauty out. The other stuff was exceptional, but this one blew me away! Pop 1/0!!! He let me take a photo of it and it is currently NFS per him as he wanted to enjoy it for a bit. Goes to show you that great raw stuff is available still!

WOW thats a beautiful coin. There are tons of coins out there that aren't slabbed. Its not because they aren't worth being slabbed either. Plenty of old coin collections around that were put together before slabs even existed. Many people falsely believe that all of the great coins have already been certified. This coin proves them wrong.

So did you ask what would you take for it? 😉 a very beautiful coin.

That’s a beautiful coin. I hit the LCS today but just got a little bullion.
Now THAT'S a coin worthy of its declared value!

That coin is out of my budget and Im sure when it is time to sell will go to a major auction house.
Im sure it would go for more than guide!
The really neat part of this story is I live in a rural area of Appalachia and this is a small store. Who knows how the original party acquired it. Per the dealer, the coins were acquired before the '70s and had been sitting in the album since!
Beautiful!

If it's raw, there's a reason. I read that here all the time.
/s
It was raw when he bought it, now it is graded and PCGS top pop!
Not anymore!
What a find!
To have a raw coin like that hidden away, and then it goes straight to the top of the condition census, just does not happen very often these days! I love it, and the color is exactly what it should be. Gorgeous coin. That is what I call a prototypical ultra gem Barber proof of the late 1800's. It's a Shelby Cobra 454 stored in the barn, under a cover, but it needs no restoration.
it.
Oh my indeed!
That is incredible and gorgeous.
Thanks fo4 sharing.
What a cool encounter and sighting!

The picture of the coin in the slab looks better than the True Views. Nice picture. AMAZING coin!
@erwindoc original Shelby Cobras came with a 427 side oiler. Never a 454. Also had a 289 version and I think the early ones had a 260.

@Gumby1234 I stand corrected...Actually I knew that about the 427, but my mind was on over ride thinking about Barber's! Ha!
@erwindoc that's one amazing coin. I can only imagine what coins might pop out of the woodwork in the next 10 to 20 years.

They are still out there as raw coins but imo it’s not as common as in the past - especially with peace dollars, have not seen a raw one that doesn’t have hairlines since the 1980s!
I remember getting some good grades on raw finds back then — they may still be out there but they are fewer and farther between....
Great score!
Holy crap!
Not bad!!
Probably paid around $2500...well done!!

a phenomenal find . I'm amazed it sat in an album and didn;t pick up hairlines from someone running their fingers over it or just friction from an overlying page. so much could have happened to it....anddidn't!

Rural. I can't believe you have an LCS at all, lucky man. Especially with such a beauty as that stuck away.I know that I could not ever own that coin, but to hold it in the light and enjoy its radiation would be a numismatic memory not to be forgotten. Congrats on a great day you will not soon forget.

Beautiful coin and beautiful trueview!
Very nice coin
Amazing find and amazing state of preservation!
That is a beautiful coin! It pains me a little to think what the dealer might have paid for it, especially given he's got to price in the risk of buying a raw coin.

WOW!! A PR68+.... Just beautiful detail and clean fields. I am ignoring the tarnish on this beauty. What a find.... That is why I stop at yard sales.... No, nothing like that has happened to me... but it could.
Cheers, RickO
Wow! Absolutely beautiful world class coin. I’m almost speechless…
