Newp very scarce 1842 Large Letters $5.00 PCGS AU-50

I don't get golden Newps too often!
1842 Large Letters PCGS-AU-50 Population 27 in all grades, 10 finer. Total population 20 at NGC.
One of the most undervalued all Lib $5.00s. I was very happy to find a coin with good color and luster. It is a bit marked, but nothing too deep. This issue shows up slightly over once a year. Many of these are stripped of color and are either baggy or not lustrous. The 1842 Small Letters is the other variety of this year and it is on the scarce side also. Glad a good one came up this year!

Semikey- Awesome pickup! I must admit that I was sad to see you sell your Seated Dollars but it’s fun watching you continue on with tougher date gold. Congrats!
Nice coin! Congrats on acquiring it!

Very nice coin.... and I like gold coins. Excellent year as well... I believe there is another thread here of an 1842 as well.... Cheers, RickO
Great date, I have owned three of this type over the last decade. It is very elusive, especially nice.

What a nice acquisition @semikeycollector.
Nice pedigree too.
One of a pop of 6 with only 10 graded higher.
Enjoy.

Boosibri, I love that coin!
Nice coin.
Thank you!
@semikeycollector - I am still doing Seated Dollars. I have thought about expanding into other series but I have not yet found anything that brings me the same excitement, pleasure satisfaction as SLDs. It’s truly an addiction!
If you get turned on by population reports and bang for the buck $5.00 gold is amazing. There are pretty as well! You must have some set of LSDs by now!
Thanks! My AU50 was actually the best of the three. Doug Winter has it in his personal collection now.

Beautiful coin! I wonder, why in the pcgs coin online price guide, pcgs notes the low population count for (all?) other years and varieties (less than 100 known, 50 to 60 known etc) but does not do so for this coin - which has a known surviving pop of 47 is among the rarest of all half eagles?
Pops of varieties shouldn’t be taken in the same context of populations of dates. There are 42 large letters in normal holders and 47 is not a not significant amount considering the number of actual gold variety collectors out there.
11.5$ Southern Dollars, The little “Big Easy” set
I understand what you are saying, Not a big deal - it’s just that other varieties are noted - just not the 1842 philly. Ex. 1842C sd/ld. The 1842C small date says less than 100 known but then clicking the detail it shows there are 110. So the 1842P large letters is significantly more rare and sl is just as rare.
Just wondering why they skip some of the philly coins if they are going to note this?
there is one coming up in the upcoming Stacks Bowers sale of the Fairmont collection. It looks very nice.

Not bidding but that is a beauty. I bought another one, just did not get it yet.
Maybe it is good they don’t advertise how rare they are in the price guide, well kept secret!
Wow-- what a great find. I love these as well, and have been on the lookout for a nice example like this one-- patience is key. Good job!
I wonder if anyone on this board has done any research on the 1842 SL/LL? Any details about known survivors, any found in europe in recent years, or fromhoards, etc.?
Love the coin but I'd be driven insane every time I looked at Ms. Liberty laying down in the plastic holder!
