1880-S Morgan for the date album

SkyManSkyMan Posts: 9,493 ✭✭✭✭✭

As mentioned previously, there is no specific look or grade that I'm looking for for the Morgans in the album, it's more of an "I'll know it when I see it" kind of an approach. Here's the 1880-S Morgan for my date album. I always enjoyed how S mint Morgans from 1878 - 1882 look. I've still got "holes" for 1881 and 1882 and may add a few more S mint Morgans for those years to the album. The images are by Bob Campbell, and I think he did an excellent job.

Fairly clean fields, clean cheek... whattaya say, MS65 or 66? (trying to calibrate my relative inexperience grading MS coins)

It looks like a nice MS-65 to me. It could make MS-66 on a good day. As you mentioned, the S-Mint coins from this period were well made and available in high grade. That has tended to make the graders take a conservative approach to these coins.

That's a great looking piece! As it happens, I've never been enamored by the design of Morgans, but I have a boatload because they can look so nice. My stash is largely toned, but I also have a few 80-S and 81-S examples with a touch of peripheral color at best just because--as your coin shows--they can come so, so nice.

While this coin in-hand might have something that holds it to a 65 grade…..I don’t think graders in general are knocking grades down due to the plentiful availability of high graded examples…in fact there seem to be a glut of recently graded 67/67+ common date Morgan’s out there, most of which appear deserving, just like this coin here IMO….

I think that the opposite is true: graders are more likely to hold off on handing out a high grade on the rarer/rare date Morgan’s due to the giant price jumps and small pops in gem+ territory.

Are you saying a rare date Morgan with this eye appeal wouldn't get a 66? Also, according to your logic, I don't understand how the Jack Lee 1893-S got MS-67.

Beautiful Morgan. That coin I could easily see 66+ CAC And Would not second guess at all if it was 67.

Very nice coin! Morgan dollars have never been one of my favorites. However, I have considered a date set. How difficult is that in mint state?
