Hypothetical... You suddenly have $2000 to spend on coins...

What do you do? Given the recent upswing in the coin market, what would you buy? ...and why?

Indian eagle as good as I can get for my type set. Had one in a small ANACS holder once and sold it, but this time around doing a pcgs set.
That’s called my credit card
Double eagle or eagle, depending on grade and mint mark
Stash $1500.00 in my mattress 1st and then proceed.
1000 powerball tickets?
Whatever comes up first that fits the collection.

I’ll tell you the last coin I bought for 2k. As rare of a gold eagle as one can find, there are so many staggeringly rare eagles that are still priced like gold was cheaper and the common dates were fractions of their value. Gold has gone up, the common dates have doubled but the really rare ones are about the same. Low mintage and minuscule survivorship and almost fully proof like to boot. The coins from the 1860-70 all have tiny survivorship numbers some only in the few dozen.

There might be better investments but I am convinced that the days of avg collectors being able to get into true rare coins might be further out of reach down the road.
11.5$ Southern Dollars, The little “Big Easy” set
Given the way prices are continuing to rise I would be unlikely to buy any coins right now.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
I would buy a bunch of meme stocks and hope for the best ;-)

$2000... Am I investing or buying for my collection? For investment I would not buy a coin. For my collection I'd probably find a nice mid-range uncirculated gold dollar I don't currently have.
I'd put it towards some rare plastic, if any were available!
Coins from Kazakhstan; and I’m not even kidding!
There are some great designs and that is one of my areas to collect lately.
Love this answer
Thanks!
).
And full disclosure I just spent some money on coins from Kazakhstan at the end of last week (and no one even gave me the $2k yet
A nice Barber half for my circulated 19th century slabbed type set. That’s probably the next coin I’m going to want to get

If I had $2000 to spend I would buy the coins I’m trying to sell 🤔
Since the OP said coins, I would buy a very nice Gothic Florin with $2000

I think it's interesting that I said "coins" (plural) and so far everyone is spending $2k on a single coin... I'm not counting the $1500 in a mattress...
Hypothetically... I think I'd gravitate towards an 18th C Type piece. Prices are trending upwards even for lower graded (VG-F) pieces and the higher prices seem to be bringing out better material... at least better than what I've seen over the last couple of years.

I would likely buy a Gold Buffalo, for as close to melt as I could find.... Pure gold, easily moved and a good stacker. Cheers, RickO
it would depend on what sets I was interested in or working on.
Gold is nice, but also close to all time highs ....
I was going to say a gold Buffalo like @ricko because you can't lose on something like that. But my real answer is I'd buy another one of these for $1900. bucks, but there aren't any available....And I mean zero.

wreath cent
Good question. I'm stuck deciding between the famous 1955 dd Cent (graded, of course) or 10 PCGS grades of different dates of the Morgan Dollars? Maybe even one Morgan CC in there? Whatever $200 would buy.
Thanks for the $2000 Christmas present!

I knew it would happen.
A Moby Dick dime.
I think those cost either 10 cents each, or waaay more than $2000.
I'm pretty sure I can land one right here for $2000.
That would be a fluke. Don't blubber if it doesn't work out...
..is it on the BST yet? Asking for a friend...

Really depends on what I run into in the wild.
Soon enough, I’m sure….
Anyway, I’d probably use the $2k as a down payment on a low grade chain or 1799 large cent.
Yep, it would apply to one coin that would be an addition to my type set journey. No hurry.

The way it works for me is that I have to put the money away until something I am seeking becomes available. For that amount, it could be a Roman or British coin, or perhaps one or more Proof coin from the 1937 to 1941 era.
Key/semi-key type piece(s)
Proof Walker
Cameo Franklin
DMPL Morgan
Something along those lines, or some combo of above.
Hellanice coin!
My problem is, I overthink... why do I have $2000 for coins? Should I be spending that much on coins? Do I have to spend it all at once? Does it have to be for my collection, or could I resell?
But, if I had $2000 gift that I could only use to buy a coin, for my collection, and I had to spend it right away...
Probably I'd look for something like this, for my Morgan album... might find a nice "G4" for $2k?
Add it to what I’ve got saved now and get 1877 Indian anywhere in ms
Would look for a few low pop slabbed Mexico coins off GC or EB. Then put in online store at plan markup. I think I need 4 or 5 slabs get back to plan # of slabs. Then $100 of that for currency subm some CSA & USA Obsoletes.
Thanks! 👍

Do you know whats funny? Work is giving me almost 2k as a bonus for being a good worker this year. This question is real for me lol! I am debating on some gold liberties or maybe a double gold eagle.

I’ve collected Barber quarters and halves, depending upon my mood or mini-goal, in circ grades for 20 years.
I’ve never owned a mint state example.
I’d probably grab a PC or NGC 64 in a semi scarce date with some black rim toning and loads of white pastel frost.
$2k? Bitcoin
that'll hit $2400 before any physical coin will.
i mean if we're talking pure investment.
unless you can snipe a raw key & get a good grade, and a nice flip.
