Do you know whats funny? Work is giving me almost 2k as a bonus for being a good worker this year. This question is real for me lol! I am debating on some gold liberties or maybe a double gold eagle.
Since this is hypothetical, and the $2,000. would be exclusively to spend for coins.
I would buy a pre 1880s gold Liberty Double Eagle, in the best condition that I could find for the money, in a PCGS certified slab.
Besides my attraction to gold coins in general, the reason for this selection is that I feel that sometime in the future, I could sell this very liquid coin and make a profit.
Well, on the way to my local coin dealer with 2 grand burning a hole in my pocket, I would convince my numismatic side of my brain to give in to my golf addiction and drive straight to the closest golf town to buy these beauties for $2000 Canadian.
One of the nicest looking and hitting set of irons I have ever golfed with....the Ping i500s.

Stop at a bunch of shops with cash in hand; try to deal and negotiate figuring your maximum offer before dealing. Be ready to walk out and move on to the next one. Quality raw coins where the dealer is tired of the long waits and expense of certification are what I would look for, especially "liners" where the coin could easily get a higher grade than the dealer thinks it is; if you have the patience and know how to grade, in a few months when they come back from grading you should be in a better position.
It is a sellers market so what you buy now for 2Gs was much less than that in 2019 - so agree with other posters that bullion coins with no numismatic value is best bet now / and even that likely to be a sellers market at some point in next year or so - gold, silver and platinum all going up.
But If I was forced to do numismatic coin then I would buy that super damn cool 1921 uncirculated Liberty walker half dollar on eBay ... incredible coin...!! I think the one I like is AU58 and just beautiful / exactly 2Gs (which is not bad for that one) ...
do NOT buy a 1921 peace dollar - those are up only 600% last year or so ... crazy! If you want one and don’t have it well don’t buy it now!!
