If I couldn’t immediately pay my college loan bills after college then I will consider selling the whole collection

  • divecchiadivecchia Posts: 6,688 ✭✭✭✭✭

If I could no longer afford to buy I'd likely keep what I had. If my interest waned because I was not purchasing anything new and I no longer enjoyed what I had, then I would sell it all. This is exactly what I did last year with my Nolan Ryan collection. I stopped buying to fund my coin collection. When interest in the baseball cards waned, I sold them. If I had a choice I would not want to burden family with whatever collectible I have. Cash is easier for them to deal with.

My advice to you is to keep what you have and see where your interest goes. If it wanes then sell. If looking at the pieces you have makes you happy, then keep them.

Speaking for myself I would keep them. A lot of factors goes into making the decision to sell. Speaking for just myself, no I’d keep them. I have spent years on end finding each and every one of my coins that resides in my collection. Selling them would be like pulling teeth. I have sold a very nice key date recently to a friend of mine right here on this forum. I have missed that coin every time I look at my collection. It haunts me for a long time after the sale. My dad taught me to try and hold on to my coins. He said if it’s just money you need there’s always another way. I took those words to heart.
Good luck with your decision my brother.

I enjoy the American coins I have. I enjoy studying them every day. CAC has ended my participation in the U.S. coin market in a significant way, but I enjoy what I have. I will not be selling at this moment.

What do you mean about CAC?

First CAC HIJAC of the month? And away we go!!! 😱

He brought up CAC not me!! He didn’t explain what he meant so you are talking stupid

No, I was poking fun at CAC threads. "Talking stupid"? The mind boggles...

Sorry I thought were talking against me

    IMO:
Under extreme circumstances, all of us would sell.
I have never sold a coin but have given some away.
My plans are to pass them down.
To answer the OP's question, I would keep them.

Buy, sell, trade... to me that's all part of the fun of my hobby. I can't imagine if I still had all the things I bought - wow what a conglomeration of stuff! Buying, selling and trading has allowed me to collect a whole lot more stuff and the fun of wheeling & dealing and even ebay selling some things too. So far the results have been that I have a more cohesive collection, I've sold complete sets of quite a few series, can't really say I miss them, it was fun putting together the sets and fun to sell them. As long as I've got the physical and mental capacity to keep on doing the same, that's my plan.

As has been stated, it is all about the journey, not the destination. I would sell.

I would sell it if the Wuhan lab would be demolished and Fauci thrown in jail.

Well said my friend. It can be difficult to replace your favorite coins I don’t sell anything unless I am unhappy with the coin or if I find a better coin I might replace it

If you are like me and have mostly widget type stuff, nothing extremely rare or valuable I think if you sold them there’s a pretty good chance you will be disappointed in your returns and might put a bad taste in your mouth on returning to the hobby. I’d just just put it on hold and keep what you have. Years down the road you may come back to it and be pleasantly surprised with what you have.

Sell some, save some. First off, all my significant coins I've got good images of, so I can still "see" them even if I sell them.

There are some coins that I've owned for 30ish years, that I still enjoy looking at now and then (every so often when I visit the bank SDB). There are others that I know how rare they are for the Type/Date/MM and still like them. Then there are the toned slabbed Franklin halves that make up my primary set.

Having said that, I've a lot of slabbed coins that, while attractive, I don't need, and don't even really look at in my SDB... by numbers probably more than 1/2 my slabbed coins. In addition, there are plenty of duplicates. All of these, and a serious slug of raw coins, I could sell and not have any regrets.

I think the decision depends on your age, health status and if you have a child or relative interested in your collection.

Why burden your family with selling your collection after you die if they have no interest in the hobby?

Haven't most of us heard a story from a bank teller whose spouse or loved one deposited silver coins at face value?

The coin shop owner or dealer who's has had a spouse or loved one bring in a collection with no idea of the value?

To answer the OP questions directly, if you need the money to pay bills then sell. If you are young and are just tight on cash for the hobby sell what you don't care about and use the funds to buy something that brings you happiness.

Life is short. Enjoy the ride until it's your turn to get off the ride.😎

It was more of a general question. I don't have anyone in my family that has any interest in coins. I have a couple other hobbies that I enjoy as much, if not more since I have quit buying coins. I still check out auctions but just can't justify pulling triggers on them anymore. Not sure if my other hobbies have taken precedence or I am losing interest in coins. I still like looking at my collection but not as much as I used to. The US Mint really put a damper on a couple yearly subs I used to purchase due to price increases and I think this is part of the reason I'm in the mindset that I have. I just have to decide to either downsize, sell and find a new series to collect or just sell it all. Thanks for all the inciteful responses!

  • rec78rec78 Posts: 5,753 ✭✭✭✭✭

I never saw any sense to sell one series to purchase another. The series that I put together are my accomplishment. They stay with me until I decide to start selling them. If I decide to start to sell them, all will be available. Probably mostly by eBay. You may not agree with their fees but they do have advantages. A big stage means a lot. You are going to pay where ever you sell them or you could sell them to your local dealer for a lot less then their true value. I am 70 years old and have been collecting for over 62 years. This may be soon or I may decide to wait a few more years. I have a lot of raw coins and unattributed large cents and that kind of stuff, that I had long before TPG's came along.

You really have to pay taxes if you are moving to Europe? That SUXS!

Im in that situation now with my collection. I can sell, store it in a private vault or I can figure out how to insure and ship my collection to Europe and pay import taxes and duties on it.

    I decided to ship it.

Every country has import/customs duties and taxes on almost everything that's imported from a foreign bloc. Where I am its 9% - so between the taxes, shipping costs, insurance it will probably be $10,000+ to move the collection to Europe.

I doubt I will recover those costs, but it is what it is... I could never assemble the same collection today. If I tried it would cost me far more than the $10,000+ to import it.

I'll never find the same coins in Europe.

My game plan doesn't change. I'm going to actively collect as long as I'm breathing. When the time comes, my wife or kids will make one phone call to Heritage and they will take care of everything.

I'm sure you have good reasons for moving to Europe. You mentioned "I'll never find the same coins in Europe." Will the ultimate liquidation of your collection be difficult?

I moved because my GF lives here... I dont have any heirs - yet, but when the collection will need to sold I will do so through Heritage. They have an office in the Netherlands and if necessary they can ship some/all the collection to Dallas. They are also an official PCGS & NGC representative in Europe so I can submit coins for grading directly through their offices.

Before I sold it, I made a photoshop collage of the set, had it professionally printed on a sheet of metal, and it hangs next to my coin hangout spot now. The size and resolution are good enough I can still appreciate and "see" the details of the coins. I still get to enjoy them, but I don't have the capital tied up. The timing for the building project was perfect too. Doing it now would almost certainly cost twice as much. But, I really should have kept the 1924. ;)

Great idea! Thanks for the story and the pics!

I have sold some stuff in my collection that did not fit anymore or just didn't care for anymore to use those funds for coins I want!! This has helped me get a couple of my pre 1933 gold coins.

  • I actually went through this exact scenario a decade ago. I still regret selling my 1824 over various dates half. MS64 Morgans and St. Gaudens can easily be replaced though. This time around I'm just doing a nice type set so there won't be any regrets if I have to liquidate again. I know everyone says you shouldn't look at coin collecting as an investment but I dunno, maybe you should... Just my 2 cent piece.

I keep expanding my collecting interests, but I have sold series and other collectibles once the thrill of the hunt ends and I'm not getting much out of viewing and sharing. I won't really be done until **I'm **done. Detailed instructions provided to my executor and others.

Well, selling every once in a while can be a healthy thing. Having taken my Peace dollar set to its logical conclusion, I started thinking of other places to put the money. I had a bit too much of my net worth tied up there, and it seemed logical to sell it and put the money toward the shop I'd been hoping to build.

So I did. I kept a couple of the coins for type purposes and sold the rest with the help of Larry Shapiro. The transaction was smooth and I even made a small profit (miracle!), mostly from getting a few to upgrade, and some favorable market conditions at the time.

I will only sell if and when my interest dissolves in my collection. I occasionally sell stuff that no longer excites me. It keeps the collection clean feeling...
