Would you sell your collection or keep it?

bsshog40bsshog40 Posts: 3,925 ✭✭✭✭✭

I know there has to be some collectors out there that have a very limited budget. So my question is, if you can no longer really afford to continue buying coins, but still enjoy the hobby, would you sell your collection or just keep what you have and enjoy it? Maybe sell a certain series to add to another series? I would be interested in your replies!

I would sell it all at 2x cost then start over.

Everything I have I'd sell, except the wife and dogs. Just make a crazy offer.

But, if I can no longer afford to continue buying the coins I want, I'd sell and move on in life. Besides, they're just coins.

Im in that situation now with my collection. I can sell, store it in a private vault or I can figure out how to insure and ship my collection to Europe and pay import taxes and duties on it.

    I decided to ship it.

I would at least hang onto any key coins.

If you need the money then sell them now - it is a sellers market and that only occurs a few years out of twenty or more ....

I would sell my collection and then go to coin roll hunting. I could go through a LOT of rolls from the proceeds of selling my collection. Who knows? I may find something good.

Kinda been in that situation ATM.

    I'd keep what I have

I like being able to look at my collection from time to time. I don't think my collection would be coin dealer quality. I may sell one day, but only if I had to.

I'd go through everything and see which items you still gravitate towards. Do any invoke fond memories? Make some piles-keep, sell, and uncertain. Then try selling the ones that you don't excite you any longer (the sell pike). Those funds can be used on adding coins that you do want.

Sell the widgets. Keep anything it would be extremely difficult to replace.

  • mirabelamirabela Posts: 5,049 ✭✭✭✭✭

That's been me a few times and I've taken kind of a middle road, selling everything that doesn't have a really strong hold on me; the upshot is I have a smaller and better collection.

I'd keep the collect to enjoy and stop buying.

A couple good comments mentioned have got me to think about my collection a little better. All of our stuff is in storage at the moment due to moving and hoping to sell and then buy a house in the next few months. I have a bit of stuff that really doesn't mean that much to me. When I'm able to, I really need to sit down and go thru my collection and try to weed out the misc stuff. The only problem is most of that stuff wouldn't be worth auction and shipping fees. Might be tradeable items though. Ummmmm Maybe BST material when the time comes.

I’d sell some to make a better more focused collection. Like if I’m not already collecting a series I’d sell off all but 1 or 2 favorites of that type of coin (keeping one or 2 for type set) and/or to complete any series where I already have most of them. Also sell off junk coins and silver to fund the more focused collection

Sold a bunch these past few months. Bought a few in the same few months. I don't think I will ever dump the entire collection unless there was some extreme circumstance.

I sold most of mine thru GC late last year and first of this year, kept a few , hadnt missed em.

did manage to buy back and old freind I sold 11 years ago recently, and I still find myself looking at coins in auction venues and even tossing a bid or two in, not sure why, but cant stop the fever.

Only reason i sold mine to start with wasn't sure how much time I Had left, come to find out plan to be around a while, unless I get run over by a truck or something.

Not really selling everything but I am going to thin out my collection. It’s a little over a year now that I thought
to sell what isn’t super important to me and I’m getting closer to that goal. I thought it would be easier to separate the sell
pile but it’s not. And, I’m still not done sending in all the stuff I need to be graded and imaged. I am hoping to get it finished in the next 4-6 months and get things up for auction.

I do not anticipate buying much in the coming year (s) for the very reason you suggest, but I also do not anticipate selling anything either. The vast bulk of my collection lives at the SDB so I enjoy the photos and will work on improving those.

I have been collecting, but not selling coins my whole life. I have nobody in my family who has any interest in coins. I am starting to slowly sell off my collection. It will take me many years. I will keep my PCGS certified, easy to sell, key date coins. I will sell my other collectible coins, and use the money to buy gold and silver bullion. I will also keep my junk silver. I will not burden my heirs with a collection that nobody wants, and would have no idea what it is worth, or how to get rid of it. Ideally, Instead of leaving my family a bunch of collector coins. I can leave them bullion that they can check the daily spot price prior to selling. And, PCGS certified key date coins that they can check the approximate value, by checking the serial numbers on the PCGS website.

I have always been a collector and had many different collections over the years. When I reach the point where I feel I've gone as far as I can given my "budget" and what I can reasonably find in the future, I've sold everything. One time to fund the difference for my next house. Another time was to start my children's college funds. I've felt there is no point in keeping a few special items that I no longer have a real interest in. Selling has taught me to be a more careful buyer with the next collectible interest. I'm now in my second go around with coins.

Does the pride of ownership and looking at the coins give you more or less pleasure than what you would use the proceeds for?

That would be my primary answer. That said, I don’t think your question is any different from those that could by more coins, but have decided that coins should not take up more than $xxxx

That is more my situation. So when I am essentially at my maximum coin collection value, if I find another coin I want, I have to find something to sell in order to get the funds. Not exactly a box of 20 concept, but similar. Keeps you in the game, and forces you to decide which coin would give you more enjoyment.

If your collection should not take up more than x dollars, and you are at that limit, you could give away some of it and buy more. Find a worthy cause?

I am on a limited budget now. I can only buy roughly equivalent to what I profit off coins.

Sell and start over with the proceeds. If the coins are just collecting dust in a safe and you never look at them, what joy is that bringing to your life?

    Basically in the same situation.

    I find it refreshing.

It pushed me into statehood quarters and moderns.

As long as you know something about alot of series you can still play the game.

Ya, a couple series I really enjoyed collecting were proof sets and SAE's. When the mint went up in prices this year, that stopped those series. I may wind up selling thinks like that and then go thru the rest.

As a 68 year old guy I've done some practical review. Most of my stuff is low value this and that which might be hard to sell even on E-Bay. Lots of incomplete year sets, cameo quarters, duplicates, toners and the like. I'm considering beginning the process of liquidating things I never even look at to save my family the headache I can't even figure out.
I'd keep the nicer looking slabbed materials since their value is much easier to define.

If I was no longer able to buy; I would keep what I have, unless, there was something I found that I wanted even more. It does seem like a good sellers market, these days, and I wonder how long it will last. Will it subside or slowly increase even more? We can only guess….

Speaking for myself I would keep them. A lot of factors goes into making the decision to sell. Speaking for just myself, no I’d keep them. I have spent years on end finding each and every one of my coins that resides in my collection. Selling them would be like pulling teeth. I have sold a very nice key date recently to a friend of mine right here on this forum. I have missed that coin every time I look at my collection. It haunts me for a long time after the sale. My dad taught me to try and hold on to my coins. He said if it’s just money you need there’s always another way. I took those words to heart.
Good luck with your decision my brother.
