What kind of value on a cleaned coin?
Hi guys, I was wondering. I have this graded Kennedy variety that's been "Detailed Cleaned". It's the "No FG" 1972D.
It states on the coin cleaned but also states, "XF"?
In the PCGS p.guide for a 45 xf it has a $325 price. Now, I I'm aware of the coin cleaned so the value would drop but would my coin be anywhere near the XF value you think? Or would it be considered to be a far less price point than the XF 45 it shows?
Thanks guys

so, you found this one roll hunting right? i think they made a mistake on the grade. the only thing i see close to evidence of cleaning is on the chin/jaw/upper neck are some faint hairlines. i doubt this is a cleaned coin pulled from circulation.
the value is only what people are willing to pay for it. the only way you can tell is put it up for auction at starting bid 50 cents and see where it ends up. my guess is you'll get close to this one:

@joeykoins
Can you show the coin in its holder?
Thanks

Kennedys are my quest...
Thank you, for your reply and
suggestions. Yes, I did find CRHunting. Mistake possibility huh? This is what I thought too. Why and who would clean a clad coin? I would resend by cracking out but fear to lose the "No FG" variety. The ebay suggestion is probably the way to go to really find out the answer, right? This variety is so well known, it may receive a higher value than most cleaned coins?
Thanks again.

Lol. I know. What I posted about to, "who would clean clad coins", I say in jest. Lol. I for one, do it all the time. Thanks

Who isn't cleaning coins? 90% of coins have been cleaned at one time or another. Maybe there should be public service announcements and billboards telling people to not clean their coins. I have suffered psychological damage from seeing rare bust coins shined up with a Brillo pad.

I have seen them offered at least a grade lower, if not two. As mentioned, that cleaning is hard to find.
Joey, nice find on the variety.
You're making a big mistake basing your valuation of this coin on the PCGS price guide.
Why not do a little more research, and you can explain why. This will be a good exercise for you.
Hint: Look again at the Coinfacts page and then look at the recent sales on GC: https://www.greatcollections.com/search.php?fromyear=&toyear=2021&grade_range_1=1&grade_range_2=70&ungraded=0&ungraded=1&fromprice=&toprice=&mode=product&sort=02&series=0&q=1972+half+fs+901&listing_type=4&frombid=0&tobid=500
I don’t really see much cleaning there to merit a Details grade but it’s got some scratches and discoloration.
I don’t know why you would quote the XF45 price for a details coin rather than starting with the XF40 one ($275) but if that eBay sale is any guide, the price guide may not be far off. So maybe a straight XF is $250 and a details one is 70% of that? That would put yours at $175. Huge score for a CRH find.
not my series, but some of that looks like die polish lines to me. you can only tell so much from a photo.
Might have gone through the laundry ? Accidentally cleaned. If loose in the washer it get dryer rub but in a pocket not so much. Just a thought 😉

I've seen lots of accidentally cleaned "laundered" coins in my house. Come to think of it, they do look a lot cleaner. Especially when they tumble dry in the dryer too.
If you look at the obverse, above IN GOD WE it appears to have hairlines.

One to 2 grades lower than the actual grade deducted for the cleaning depending on how harsh.
You have the coin in hand... If you take exception to the 'cleaned' disposition, you could submit for reconsideration. Since it was a CRH find though, and you paid for slabbing, I would just sell it and enjoy the profit. Cheers, RickO
It depends on the coin, I had a WLH that brought 3X what I paid and a Liberty that brought 1X what I paid. Both were cleaned on label.
Put it up on GC and find out for sure.

Are there any actual sales results for a similar coin without the cleaning? I'd use that as a starting point and reduce the value by two full grades.
Does that include accidental in-the-pants-pocket washing machine events? I end up hearing 'clanking' in the machine, find the coin, then what do you know... "cleaned"... with scratch marks on the coin surfaces.
Edit: Moral of the story, after a day at the local coin shop, don't forget to take out your purchases from your pants pockets. Kudos goes out to @Jzyskowski1 on this idea.

Personally, I always pass on coins that have been cleaned. When it comes to value, if it is not super rare it will narrow the audience who might try to get it.

Maybe I'm giving away a small trade secret but...
I do some side-work on older cars and often go to the local junk yards in search of replacement parts.
I often times find lots of coins deep under seats, in glove boxes, in center consoles, etc. that are caked in old soda spills, food, ketchup, etc....nasty stuff!
I'll put them to the side and then when I get home, I just soak them in hot water with Dawn to get rid of the nastiness they are encrusted in. Granted, I'm not scrubbing them....maybe a sponging if there's something sticking on a coin but overall, I'm just soaking them in water/dish soap and a rinse after a while.
I have found some interesting coins (to me at least)...but maybe I need to change my ways.
Who knows, maybe an older common coin was in someone's glove box along the way and someone cleaned it similar to how I do.

I got one back today as "polished". I guess I can't like shiny coins.
