2 Unslabbed Gold Purchases Last Saturday

I took a chance and bought two raw gold coins last Saturday. Weights and mm measurements are where they should be - $20 Double Eagle and $5 Half Eagle. I'm hoping they are genuine.

It's more about where you got them.

  • Sorry jmlanzaf, pics were not originally shown with original post. I'm hoping these may qualify as dirty gold.

  • It is possible to buy unslabbed gold coins and avoid counterfeits... it just takes knowledge and experience, and most importantly... patience.

I bought three ($5 Indian, $10 Indian, $20 St. Gaudens) at a show today from people I trust.

But I also do my homework and look at all three sides of the coin for well-known markers of spurious coins, and check the weight and the dimensions. I'm never in a hurry and I usually spend 5 to 10 minutes looking at each coin. It's just like anything else, if you spend a lot of time looking at coins, you develop a good sense of what's right and what's not.

Sometimes I can pick up an especially attractive coin before it gets slabbed. I saw plenty of slabbed pre-33 gold coins today that although they were MS62 to MS64, they weren't really attractive.

The 03-s reverse rim is below the denticles. I wonder if the rims were played with.

They look like legit to me.

But I would prefer spending ~ the same amount of money for a slabbed coin in the highest possible grade.

Look good. I know more about silver though. Getting them at the right price is important too.

They look authentic, original, and problem free from what I can see in your pics.

Based on the pictures, I would say authentic. Nice acquisitions... Cheers, RickO

I like them, they look good to me. Not that long ago all coins were "raw" and many still are today, especially those with small premiums if slabbed. You just need to know who you are buying from and be familiar with pick-up points on counterfeits.

Low grade slabbed gold coins don't cost that much more than raw ones. I'll stick with the certified ones. At least you have a guarantee of authenticity if an issue arises in the future.

They look to be authentic, but as others have said you can a slabbed certified coin for very little over melt. Just last week I saw a nice original PCGS MS62 1904 DE that was priced pretty high, almost 800 over melt value. Just to prove a point to the seller, I sent an offer to the seller at about 75 dollars over melt. Surprisingly he Accepted, and now that coin is on its way to Mr. Dan Carr for the 1908-O overstrike.

I will not take a chance. I cannot tell counterfeit gold from genuine gold. If I buy pre 1933 gold, I would pay a little extra and get coins certified by PCGS or NGC. It will also make it easier to sell when the time comes.

Modern gold, I will buy raw from a recognized sources such as JM Bullion, SD Bullion, etc.

Even better when you can get them in OGHs at a little over melt:

I think they're legit... the $20 looks AU and kind of baggy. The 1903 S $5 looks like XF details but theres some scratches or graffiti on the reverse...

No problem purchasing raw gold here. Before you purchase ANY gold, modern or pre-1933, I suggest taking the time to recognize the difference... oh and make sure you can tell a real slab from a fake. I also see no reason to pay premiums to the sources you mention for modern gold. Take some time and look at example after example and most will become obvious. I also have to say that IMO the warnings of fakes is quite over-blown... out there but not nearly as prevalent as many suggest.

  • Thanks guys. Yep, they were raw and I kinda knew the source...otherwise I'd have been a bit reluctant to buy raw. Not worth slabbing but they will go in the stack pile :)
