Grade?

Update: Seller agreed to cancel the order. Said the coin was cleaned when I messaged them. Live and learn I guess. Much more to learn... Thanks for the tips.

What grade would you think this 1903S Morgan would get? Also, wondering if I overpaid for it, what price would you of gone up to?

It is a rare date, but appears to be polished and/or cleaned to me. Hard to tell from those pictures but it would be a details coin with any grading service.

My advice for now, with the small amount of experience that I have, is to stick with coins graded by tpgs and wait until you have some more knowledge before buying an expensive raw coin. I’ve made similar mistakes when I first started. It’s not for me to reveal what you paid but I found the listing, and personally I would have never paid anything close to that for this coin.

As noted, brutally scrubbed and not desirable unless really cheap.

Since you asked, I believe that coin will not straight grade due to cleaning..... If possible, return it, and look for a TPG slabbed coin.... Cheers, RickO

I hope you didn't buy it. Cleaned, polished, VF with more marks than usually seen on that grade.

To me it’s barely worth more than bullion for all the problems. The seller undoubtedly knows it’s got major problems but is hyping it anyway.

Anything north of $40 or so is a burial.

Return it if you purchased it.
If you can't, save it as a reminder of what not to buy without doing your due diligence.

Hey, at least they have a 30 day return policy. If you bought that coin I would return it immediately.

definitely over polished to make it look better, but that does not improve the grade-Flat hair above the ear and marks on neck and face are distractions along with No feather detail on Eagles breast and wings. This coin would be a No Go in my book, I don't think that it would straight grade,

I don't know what you paid for it, but if it was over $300 then yes you did. Buying key dates raw is OK if you are putting together an album, but if you are trying to put together a "collection" of quality pieces that way you have to keep in mind we are 35 years into the TPG process and you may need to consider adjusting your concept of thinking that you can find raw treasure. Not that it does not happen, but pragmatically there is ALMOST ALWAYS a reason why key dates are in 2 x 2's, and the least likely reason is that the dealer did not contemplate sending it in. Those are odds only the most astute in grading and conservation techniques should be taking on.

I see these coins a lot on eBay with the same handwriting “hi grade” (properly spelled high grade) and maybe that was on purpose but not much to add here that hasn’t been said already - buying raw coins for me they had better made some attempt to show the luster and nothing like that on this coin. I like canyon city for raw Morgan’s - I can attest to their quality if they claim BU (not near gem) gem then the coin is uncirculated, albeit low grades normally over MS60 and not cleaned. Disclaimer I do not work for them but just recommending a good seller on eBay I’ve had good experience with in the past.

It's been polished and/or harshly cleaned. If sent to PCGS it would not get a straight grade, but instead would be put into a "Genuine Details" holder if not counterfeit. Please note that I do not think it counterfeit, I just mentioned the criteria for the holder.

Glad that you were able to return it. There are a lot of resources available on the internet that are helpful to look at and learn what coins of certain grades look like. I would suggest before you step out to make a purchase for a better date or more expensive coin that you join Heritage's website (its free) and spend some time looking through their extensive archive of previously sold third party graded coins. This will show you what they should look like, and when in doubt, buy already graded coins to be safe.
