Someone told me that and then showed me a Liberty Nickel in a PF 69 holder. Neat stuff.

I could not find an 1801 listed in Coinfacts either. Draped Bust Type2 with stars. Maybe there hasn't been an 1801 certified yet?

OK, make it “a second or two”, instead of a “day nor two”.😉

It balances with my asking you if you'll look at something in my budget so you can tell me everything wrong with it

Harlan Berk asked me that question one time in his office. It was a tremendous privilege when he brought out a tray of 5, 6, and 7 figure ancients. Some were unique. He insisted that I pick them up, raw as the day they were made, and simply enjoy them.

Last time a dealer asked me that I saw 6 NGC Black slabs (none in census) and a pile of 2.0 and 2.1's all in one slab box. He said he had a buncha early rattlers "for next time". I'll get back to that store someday...

Why would or should you or the dealer risk thousands of dollars by concluding a transaction, prior to the coin being graded? Wouldn’t it likely be far more equitable to get the coin graded and then talk price?

I would have the dealer get it graded first. It looks a little bit off to me.

Getting the coin graded first wouldn’t necessarily be easier. It would take time and money and it wouldn’t automatically make negotiations any easier, either. But I do think it would dramatically increase the chances of reaching an equatable agreement on price. Final answer - “equitable” (as opposed to “easy”).

You can't cheat an honest man.

I think plenty of honest men and women have been cheated. But that aside, one of you could make a really good deal and the other, a very bad one, even if you each have the best of intentions.

    From the web:
So you cannot cheat an honest man because an honest man doesn't put himself in situations to be cheated. He dates honorable women with tremendous self respect ; he takes very well calculated risks ; he's not skeptical but he questions things ; he’s very aware that everything comes with a price ; he sees a scam from a mile away and avoids dealing with it.

There’s also a movie about it.

Anyone 'could' be cheated, given the right set of circumstances, materials and knowledge (or lack thereof). I love seeing 'neat' things...and always say yes, when such is offered. Have made a couple of deals in those situations... not all, by any means. And of the deals I did make, only a couple were coins. Cheers, RickO

Back during the mid 90’s I was in a coin shop in south Florida and bing. I asked and they pointed me to a glass case and said exactly that “ would you like to see “.
He pulled out a tray with 5 incredible toned Morgan’s. $400 They were absolutely beautiful. Target 🎯 circular toning. Only had $200 and couldn’t make a deal. I close my eyes at night sometimes and I can still see them. 😳

That was almost a common occurrence with Rich Nachbar. His office was a block away from my shop. He would call and say, "You might want to stop by this afternoon, if you get a chance." I never knew what was in store, but it was always cool. Once, a complete US gold type set spread out on his desk. He was always the master of 'show-and-tell'.
    Rest in peace Rich......

Earlier this year I was window shopping at US Coins in Houston and asked the dealer if I could look at the gold coin in the case because it looked kinda neat. Then I looked at the price and carefully handed it back to him.
I was totally caught off guard, wasn't expecting the coin to be 20K, and so no doubt the next time I go in he'll be pointing me towards the modern mint sets.
Of course he probably read me the moment I walked in the door.

Just had this happen today. Dealer knows I like old gold and need a southern mint coin.

Freshly slabbed 1854 D $2.5, au58…bought raw, just slabbed …out of my league, but even if so, it wasn’t really for sale. Still really neat to see.
