When the dealer says: You want to see something kind of neat?

"It's just something I keep back in the safe."

Pretty amazing coin to "Just" have in the back of the safe.
"When they can't find anything wrong with you, they create it!"
That’s the one he wants to keep for himself. You’re not gonna get that cheap.
Harlan Berk asked me that question one time in his office. It was a tremendous privilege when he brought out a tray of 5, 6, and 7 figure ancients. Some were unique. He insisted that I pick them up, raw as the day they were made, and simply enjoy them.
Fun memory!
I sure hope that you were able to purchase it, b/c that is SUPERCOOL!!
Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

Someone told me that and then showed me a Liberty Nickel in a PF 69 holder. Neat stuff.

Why can't I find this in the price guide??? There is no 1801...
Your title reminded me of this...
Are you looking under Eagle or Half Eagle?
I thought everything worth slabbing was… great looking coin!
Show and Tell. Like kindergarten, for adults.
Very cool!
You never know what some of these guys have "put back".
I really enjoy when a dealer says that to me, even when it's NFS, or
he knows it's way out of my price range.
It says he respects me as a knowledgeable collector, who can appreciate holding and looking at special coins, even when I can't afford them.
Yes, I offered to buy it. They threw out a number that was probably pretty close. But my FOMO is just a little weaker than the fear of paying 5 figures for a raw coin, pretty or not.
I'm dumb, but I'm not that dumb.
Or maybe I am just about that dumb.
I'm dumb.
We're still discussing it

Working where I do, on the rare occasions when I’m asked if I’d like to see something kind of neat, I rarely wait more than a day or two, before answering “Yes, please”.
OK, make it “a second or two”, instead of a “day nor two”.😉

I had collectors say "Wanna see something neat". I knew I was in for a treat
I could not find an 1801 listed in Coinfacts either. Draped Bust Type2 with stars. Maybe there hasn't been an 1801 certified yet?
Okay, I found it under draped Bust $10
It balances with my asking you if you'll look at something in my budget so you can tell me everything wrong with it
A 63 cost as much as my truck, a 65 almost the price of my house.
I had to finance both of those
LOL, I paid cash for my truck and I financed the last 10K in coins I bought.
If you live in your truck, you can afford more coins?
Not to steal the OP's thunder, but these early $10's are pretty amazing to behold. Mine pictured below.
I'd love to see a trueview of the one above. Any story to it? Why not slabbed? I'm not sure I would have the guts to buy one raw.
It took a lot of courage to pull the trigger on this one already in the slab.

This is the kind of story I love to hear..........

Last time a dealer asked me that I saw 6 NGC Black slabs (none in census) and a pile of 2.0 and 2.1's all in one slab box. He said he had a buncha early rattlers "for next time". I'll get back to that store someday...
"It's like God, Family, Country, except Sticker, Plastic, Coin."
Why would or should you or the dealer risk thousands of dollars by concluding a transaction, prior to the coin being graded? Wouldn’t it likely be far more equitable to get the coin graded and then talk price?

You can't cheat an honest man.

I would have the dealer get it graded first. It looks a little bit off to me.

“Equitable” or “easy “?

I think plenty of honest men and women have been cheated. But that aside, one of you could make a really good deal and the other, a very bad one, even if you each have the best of intentions.

Getting the coin graded first wouldn’t necessarily be easier. It would take time and money and it wouldn’t automatically make negotiations any easier, either. But I do think it would dramatically increase the chances of reaching an equatable agreement on price. Final answer - “equitable” (as opposed to “easy”).

As you work in the equivalent of Alibaba’s Cave of Wonders, it blows my mind to think of what you guys consider ‘kind of neat’!
If I remember correctly, the last time (or next to last time) that happened, I was shown a tray of coins, one of which was a Brasher Doubloon.

From the web:
So you cannot cheat an honest man because an honest man doesn't put himself in situations to be cheated. He dates honorable women with tremendous self respect ; he takes very well calculated risks ; he's not skeptical but he questions things ; he’s very aware that everything comes with a price ; he sees a scam from a mile away and avoids dealing with it.
There’s also a movie about it.
Anyone 'could' be cheated, given the right set of circumstances, materials and knowledge (or lack thereof). I love seeing 'neat' things...and always say yes, when such is offered. Have made a couple of deals in those situations... not all, by any means. And of the deals I did make, only a couple were coins. Cheers, RickO
You really should get that slabbed and get that one. I love mine and I’m glad I got it last spring:

Back during the mid 90’s I was in a coin shop in south Florida and bing. I asked and they pointed me to a glass case and said exactly that “ would you like to see “.
He pulled out a tray with 5 incredible toned Morgan’s. $400 They were absolutely beautiful. Target 🎯 circular toning. Only had $200 and couldn’t make a deal. I close my eyes at night sometimes and I can still see them. 😳

That was almost a common occurrence with Rich Nachbar. His office was a block away from my shop. He would call and say, "You might want to stop by this afternoon, if you get a chance." I never knew what was in store, but it was always cool. Once, a complete US gold type set spread out on his desk. He was always the master of 'show-and-tell'.
Rest in peace Rich......
That's very nice!

Earlier this year I was window shopping at US Coins in Houston and asked the dealer if I could look at the gold coin in the case because it looked kinda neat. Then I looked at the price and carefully handed it back to him.
I was totally caught off guard, wasn't expecting the coin to be 20K, and so no doubt the next time I go in he'll be pointing me towards the modern mint sets.
Of course he probably read me the moment I walked in the door.
Around 1977/78 or so, I was in Paris with Harry Gordon (Numismatics, Ltd.)
and we went to one of our 'best source' coin shops, as we always did.
The owner, Claude Silberstein (some will know the name), said to us when
we walked into his shop "You would like to see these", or something similar.
He handed us three (3) 1870-CC 20's ! (which we bought within 5 minutes)
Just had this happen today. Dealer knows I like old gold and need a southern mint coin.
Freshly slabbed 1854 D $2.5, au58…bought raw, just slabbed …out of my league, but even if so, it wasn’t really for sale. Still really neat to see.
Meanwhile, I'll be over here pawing through the junk silver pile looking to rip AU Franklins for near melt.
