Three Newps for My Indian Cent Set "Project"

Some of you may have read the thread I posted a couple of months or so ago regarding my starting an Indian Head Cent set. To make it challenging, I decided at the very beginning that each coin would not only be graded by PCGS and have a CAC, but must also have Rick Snow's Eagle Eye Photo Seal. (Those of you that don't care for stickers can close this post and move on once you've stopped laughing, or rolling your eyes, or saying "Not again!")

With me putting in a lot of time, looking at all major auctions, regularly searching collectorscorner.com, and working with Rick Snow and some dealers willing to work with Rick at shows (ANA and Long Beach), I now have 21 coins in my set (I had two to start from my Type Set).

Here are my three latest acquisitions, from the Long Beach show:

And here's a link to my set for those that are still interested:

Beautiful coins! The earlier "white cents" have great pale color and that 1903 is a screamer.

You definitely made the set more challenging by adding the both stickers requirement. But in the end youll have a set that deserves to be treasured. I’ll keep an eye out for you….

That 1903 is en fuego. I missed your original posts about this new set, but kudos! Criteria sounds like a task at hand, very challenging and at the end, very rewarding. Good luck, I'll be watching.

Wow. Nothing like some shiny old copper to brighten my day. I love gold but IHC will always be my favorite design.

I wonder if the"Deliverance" banjo player (who wasn't actually playing the banjo) currently appears in a Wal-Mart ad that has been running on TV. I read that he works at Wal-Mart.

I think the 1860 is undergraded and the 1903 is overgraded. I don't like the marks in the face in the 1903. The 1860 is exceptionally nice.

    Nice pick ups.
They show the true beauty of the design.
It is going to take some time before this one is finished.
    That is always the challenge.
    Your pictures are just outstanding.

Regarding the 1903, while PCGS gave it the "+", the CAC and Photo Seal don't "recognize" pluses, so each sticker indicates (among other factors) that the coin is solid as a 66, not necessarily as a 66+.

Thanks for your kind words. While I've had early success, it's easier when I need EVERY date other than the two I started with from my Type Set. So yes, it'll take some time, but I'm patient! NO rush!!!

Regarding the positive comment on the photos, they were NOT taken by me, but by Rick Snow.

My opinion on the grade of the 1903, based on the photos, is MS65 red. I don't want to see marks in key visual areas on coins graded 66 and up. I dislike the use of "+" and "*" and tend to ignore them. These are my opinions and many will disagree with them.

While you may be right, the following do disagree with you - PCGS, CAC and Rick Snow! That doesn't mean you have to like the coin, and for sure not own it yourself.

I've been involved in the hobby for 60 years. I have my own opinions about grading and what is or what is not acceptable at different grade levels. Collectors should develop their own conservative grading standards and stick to them regardless of other people's/companies opinions. If in doubt it always goes to the lower grade. Very few US coins are actually rare. Collectors should be selective about what they buy.

I realize that the first two coins are copper nickel an have a different hue than the later dated IHCs, but notice the difference in eye appeal between the coins. The 03 jumps out at you.

Question, are the contact marks on the IHC's face noticeable when not magnified 100X? If not, I can see the MS 66 grade. If so, I think the coin is overgraded. Expect a contact mark or two noticeable by the naked eye in a MS 65. Not on an MS 66.

In your acquisition strategy, are you buying them already stickered by both or taking a gamble with only one sticker hoping that it will will sticker with the other? (gosh, doesn't that sound ridiculous? - but a sincere question). I would think if taking the gamble, I'd choose the CAC only version since I think that is more difficult to obtain, less so Eagle Eye.
