The certification number checks out on PCGS. What makes this a counterfeit?
It does not have a capped die effect on the “CC” mint mark. Furthermore the Liberty on the obverse is puffed up under her eye which makes look like she lost a bar fight. There is also a lump in field in front of the bridge of her nose. The obverse does not look right.
This date and mint mark combination is know for bright, P-L fields, even on low Mint State coins. If you are familiar with the real thing, this is not a good fake.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
the era of these counterfeits and holders were starting to get pretty good. not sure what happened but it all seemed to fall apart, thankfully.
we've posted MANY of these on this forum over the years, that font/color of the insert is a dead giveaway. not the mention that lifeless turd of a coin that looks like it came from the digestive tract of a black rhino!
Yes, the insert is wrong but a thief might use older genuine inserts with switched genuine coins that just don't make the grade. That's another potential problem with counterfeit holders. Of course, then the certification numbers wouldn't check out but the holder and coin would be good, just not quite the advertised grade.
Collector and dealer in obsolete currency. Always buying all obsolete bank notes and scrip.
Thanks for the learning lesson.
I can see all the cons that have been noted.
So sad that the inexperienced collectors ( me) would have fallen prey to this dealer.
Can any additional information be provided on the hologram being fake?
Thanks in advance.
