TahoeDale passed away on Monday, 9/27/21.

Was sorry to hear of Dale's passing at age 80. He was a real character and always fun to be around. Knew coins, loved Stacey (his wife), loved coins and his friends. I know many of us will miss seeing him at coin shows in the coming months and years.

A paragraph from his obituary sums up Dale perfectly.

"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose, Cardinal.

Dale was a lawyer from Texas, retired, and moved to the Lake Tahoe area. He was a multi-dimensional man, and the paragraph above fits him like a custom made suit. He was very passionate about what he liked, and learned all of the ins and outs of a particular series before jumping into it.

He was a gentleman, and built some serious sets of Liberty Nickels and Capped Bust Half Dollars. He was very helpful to me when he found out I was looking for a type Capped Bust Half. When I told him I saw coins in MS 65 that either cost far too much imo, or were marginal for the grade, he told me that I'd get more for my money getting a better date in MS 64, because this wasn't registry set material. Glad I took his advice. RIP my friend.

Oh wow. I only got to speak with him once at an ANA show IIRC. I owned one of his pedigreed Barber quarters and we chatted about it for a while. Seemed like a great guy.

Sorry to hear. I got to know Dale initially on the forum and then later as a member of the USRGCC. Though he was better known for his interests in bust halves and Barber quarters (IIRC), his collecting interests also included rare gold coins. Passionate collector and good guy. RIP

Dale was a terrific guy. He was always willing to share his knowledge and experience with other collectors. His passion for coins was evident in building both one of the top Barber half dollar collections ever assembled including an 1892-micro O half in MS68! He then went on to build the number one redbook set of Capped Bust Half Dollars that ruled the field for over ten years on PCGS registry. He was actively building a terrific redbook set of Bust Dollars for his most recent adventure.

He had a very charming, wry sense of humor that often left us in stitches. He doted on his wonderful wife Stacey and had a sparkling smile when showing off pictures of his grandkids.

I will miss him greatly. He was a mentor and friend that cannot be replaced. Our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

I never formally met the man, though I saw him a couple times at coin shows. He had a very good eye for coins, and seemed to enjoy life fully. Condolences to family and friends, and RIP.

  • I’m very sad to hear this. I interacted with him a few times about images, and he was the subject of a few PCGS videos way back when. Rest in peace.

I heard about Dale yesterday while at Long Beach. Everything posted about him is positive and complimentary. That's a reflection of who he was. He first started buying nice coins while he was practicing law in Houston. There he got to know Kenny Duncan at US Coins and quickly became familiar with what really nice coins look like. I remember (15-20 years ago?)
he broke up a beautiful Bust Dollar Set (mostly AU and low MS I believe) through Kenny at an ANA Show. He went on to collect several different series as most of you know, and was currently building another Bust Dollar set until his passing.
I'll miss seeing him and Stacey, who was always with him at shows.

I knew and met Dale several times at coin shows and saw him at the Pogue auctions several years ago. He helped me with my Liberty nickel and capped bust half dollar sets. He was a gentleman and a classy guy, not to mention had incredible taste in coins.

    He will truly be missed!
    RIP Dale Friend :'(

Very sad news. What a great collector that didn't let norms define his collecting.

Dale was such a gentlemen. I had drinks with Dale, his lovely wife, Larry Sheppard and Gregg Bingham my very first ANA ( Boston) as a novice collector. Still one of the highlights of my coin life. I could listen to his stories all night. Eager to share his knowledge and experience. The hobby lost another giant.

    RIP Dale

  • Dale was a great friend and mentor. He was knowledgeable, kind, and very generous with his time and expertise for those that shared his passion. We traded hundreds of emails over a 7- 8 year period when I stepped up and seriously started collecting MS Bust halves. He had impeccable taste in coins, and a sharp insight into collecting, and the collecting world.

    A great loss.

    RIP.

Dale and I exchanged PM's going back to 2003 on his excellent early half dollar set. He was always very cordial and will be missed.
