1954 Proof Set

Picked this up at the local shop this afternoon on a whim. It was opened but nifty box and seems like original packaging inside. I removed the coins from the stapled plastic pouches and put them in saflips. I am now photographing them 1 by 1. Curious to hear opinions. This is outside my collecting area.

How do they look? Worth grading?

I am taking pics now, will post 1 at a time as I complete. Nickel is first and probably one of the better looking coins of the set.

I am kinda having a hard time with photographing these actually but I think I figured out a method. Hopefully the rest will go reasonably quick. Will post as I finish them 1 at a time.

I like them all. Unless you got them super cheap I probably wouldn’t slab any of them. Stick them in an Airtite or Cap holder and enjoy.
That’s me, though. If you send them off, good luck!

Agree, these would look sweet in a Capital holder

Very nice, depending upon your purchase price you got some solid coins there

Pics look nice - I agree with put them in a "Capitol Proof Set Holder" and nix the grading.

I really like those coin, I think you did well! Probably not worth grading unless you think they are top pop coins. Love the Jefferson!

I think the original box is pretty neat. I put them back in there in new mylar flips for now. I might get some airtites.

Based on price guide it looks like even the nickel isnt worth grading as nice as it is.

Was an interesting challenge to get pics. I usually only do gold, these took a pretty different lighting approach, but im happy with the results.

having them graded would be a waste of money but keeping them in Saflips or an after-market holder is a good idea. those polybags tend to tone the coins unattractively in those purples or ranging to black. they have destroyed a lot of coins and dipping them won't really help. as you can see, long term storage in the polybag ruined that cent.

That's the type of plastic that can turn sets a dark color, as Keets mentioned. 1954 was the changeover it seems, they came with either cello(preferred IMO) or that plastic.
Overall I think you got a pretty nice set, that cent is easily replaced.

Here are my two proof sets in Capital holders. I think they present well. I like the black background more, but the lettering on the red one is better, IMO.

    @ShaunBC5
Reason why the coins are rotated? Do they fit loosely?

They fit pretty well, generally speaking. I bought them like that, but when I flip the holder there’s a little rattle in the black one. I’ve never placed or removed a Capital holder coin.

I love it as a set, especially with the packaging. I like the idea of the Capital holder, nice way to present it.

That is an impressive Jefferson nickel, even looks FS. I see old mint sets at gun shows occasionally. I just check for '64 sets in case there is an AH Kennedy included. Cheers, RickO

These coins were housed in the foggy looking plastic bags that the mint used for about half of 1954 and all of the 1955 boxed Proof sets. Those bags imparted hazy toning in the silver, which is usually not attractive and can’t be removed by dipping.

I agree with others. Getting this set third party graded is not cost effective. It would be more fun to put it in a Capital Plastics holder.

Nice set...I like how the box has From US Mint, Philadelphia , PA on it. For the more seasoned folks on the board who might have ordered these, did they often get 'lost' in the mail since there was little doubt about the contents?

Picked up both the Mint Set and Proof set in the box a couple of weeks ago at a local coin show here in SoCal. My wife was born in 1954. Planning on buying one in a Capital display case. Nice nickel. Cheers.

I don't know the answer to this, but considering any postal employee could have gotten as many as he wanted directly from the mint for $2.10 each it wouldn't likely be worth it.

Since they were insured, it was not like a first envelope that might be stolen. If you stole insured mail very often, you were bound to get caught. Also it was only $2.10 in value. While that was a lot more money in 1954 than it is today, it was not worth getting caught tampering with the mail.

I have a flat pack set in an envelope that was addressed, insured and mailed. I also have 5, 1952 Proof sets with out mailing wrapper. It is obvious what was inside.

The quarter tried to have a cameo reverse. Nice set I vote Capital holder.

Nice find! The coins were preserved very well it that packaging.
