I need your opinion on this 1839-O Capped Bust 50c

I like this coin but I try to stay away from coins that aren’t graded by PCGS or NGC. The coin in question is graded by ICG and is a VF35. I want to reholder this coin with PCGS but being new to the hobby I don’t know if this coin will past muster at PCGS. If it drops in grade by PCGS I can work with that, but I don’t want it to be classified as CLEANED.
Your experience is needed here. Your thoughts?
Thank you in advance. Herb

Your coin might be spared by PCGS, given that many Bust coins have had an old cleaning.

You might want to change 1938 to 1839 in your thread title.

Opps….thank you!
Thank you!
hard pass... it has everything to do with the coin and nothing to do with the TPG

Dick Osborn told me 20 some years ago, if you want a coin in a PCGS holder you should buy the coin in a PCGS holder. You can get some wins and losses moving other peoples coins around but you wont save time or money.
This one might cross but not as a 35 and it depends on how well the 3rd skin covers the hairlines on the Rev which can be hard to tell from a slightly overexposed photo.
You would have to submit it as "cross at any grade" to stand a shot. That would prevent a Details grade too

I know this may sound harsh, however, if it were my coin, I would sell it and buy one in a PCGS holder.... Cheers, RickO
I see potential issues on both the obverse and reverse. Based on the photos in the OP, unless the price is too good to refuse, I would pass on this one.

Cleaned and too many marks for the grade. Pass.
Hope springs eternal.
I like it... as a raw coin with an old cleaning that I'd put in an album. Obviously you won't know unless you submit but I think the hairlines on the reverse may prevent a straight grade... IMHO.
@TomB has a lot of knowledge in this area...

Nice coin!
I actually recently crossed an ICG bust half MS61 to PCGS AU55. It was definitely not a 55 in my opinion as the luster was all there for a 58, so I sent it in for regrade and it went up to 58.
I also bought my 1839-O a few years back in a NGC AU55 holder, crossed it to PCGS 55 on the first try, but still didn’t agree with the grade (because of the wear, surfaces and luster) so I resubmitted it, and it upgraded to 58.
The message here is, if you’re not satisfied with a coin’s grade (or the holder), and you don’t mind spending a few bucks, try crossing it, but you may have to submit it again to get it to the correct grade.
Just my two cents, of course!
Good luck and let us know how you do.
Dave
Would you spend $1600 on this coin?
Nice Bust half. Based on the images, the coin looks cleaned. Not too bad, but the surfaces have been cleaned.
I would recommend, if you want a problem-free coin in a PCGS holder, then you should look for that coin, specifically. There are too many "variables" when resubmitting coins to TPGs or "stickering" companies.

Yikes when did @TomB become A Man of Few Words?
If you want a "filler coin" for a popular issue, and it's priced at Fine money, I'd think about it. Otherwise, no, because it's been cleaned.
Well that speaks volumes! ;-)

Personally, I wouldn’t….but that’s just me.
Sorry if that wasn’t the answer you were hoping for.
I’m kinda picky when it comes to coins I’m considering adding to my collection.

That is diffuse lighting. Those hairlines on the reverse are worse than they look. I would bet lunch it won't get a straight grade at pcgs.
As others have said, especially if you are new to the hobby and don't want to risk the occasional details grade, buy PCGS coins.

He condensed a long paragraph down to three letters and exclamation point...love it.
I'm with Ikenefic, as long as it's authentic and the only issue is cleaned, if I could get it at the right price I'd crack it and put it in an album or make it a pocket piece. I know for those that seriously collect them it would be anathema (which I totally understand) but simple having it as a fairly detailed example is enough for me.
Hey man I wish you luck as someone who has crossed a 39-o from an IGC to a PCGS holder in like for like grade. Now a PCGS AG3

I have moved on, but still looking for a nice 1839-O……thanks everyone!
Omg no

NO
Me / Unless thought upgrade would leave in ICG holder. Would price higher of cost plus or 90 pct CPG. Looks like a nice VF35 to me!
Irregardless I would not want it in any holder where it classified as cleaned or downgraded. Wb like taking points off the board.
So if I were to try cross would not want it put in details holder. Either it crosses at straight grade or sent back as is.
Keep looking. '39-O's can be pricey but they're not rare and if you take your time you'll find a better example.
I'm never put-off by the holder if I like the coin, FWIW.
Lance.
