Oh no, I just realized that the Panthers play the Jets this Sunday, Sam Darnold will be facing his old team, if we lose to the Jets I'll never live this down, my life will be ruined. I don't feel so good, I've got some thinking to do.

Put your helmets on, tighten up the chin straps and lace up those shoes - the season is finally here.

Dallas and Dak surprised me. I was impressed. I guess we all forget how bad the Tampa defense can be at times. They got good at the right time last year. They gave up some big yards and scores and were 7-5 at one time. Don’t tell me Brady isn’t the greatest. The man is unreal.

Tampa D got ripped. were not even close to containing Dak

The coolest play of the game for me was the hail mary at the end of the first half.

watching 44-year-old Brady being able to heave the ball 67 yards in the air was pretty amazing. Its crazy he still has the fastball and the long ball at his age. Impeccable mechanics go a long way.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

I’m shocked nobody is talking about the WR push off during the Bucs game winning drive, had the refs called that like they called everything else the Cowboys might have won.

    ................
If I was a Bucs fan, I would argue that the DB was off balance already and that the push off didn't completely meet the definition of the rule. And I think that is why it wasn't called.

But believe me when I say they are talking abut it here in Dallas/Fort Worth.

Nonetheless, it is unfortunate to have any penalty controversy at the end of such a great game. It would be easy, as always, to go back through the game and find missed calls and calls that were questionable.

  • craig44craig44 Posts: 11,213 ✭✭✭✭✭

Its true about missed calls throughout the game.

I bet If i looked closely on replay that i could find offensive holding on the line on at least 75% of the plays.

If called that way, it would however, make the game unwatchable.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

I'm sort of dismayed at the fact that nobody even seems to make an effort to run the ball anymore, especially with an RB the caliber of Elliot. probably less than 10 Teams even care about "establishing" any semblance of a ground game. welcome to the new NFL.

an even more egregious penalty that rarely gets called: illegal procedure, typically on the Right Tackle in obvious passing downs. you should start paying attention to this, it happened several times last night. the RT will start his play a split-second before the snap and the Ref's apparently allow it. some players are very bad/good at it, depending on your perspective, but it quite often alters the outcome of drives and games. sometimes it's so blatant that announcers even mention it.

Last night changed my opinion of Dak and the Cowboys. The Cowboys were smart enough to not run 3 times into the line and punt. McCarthy was brilliant in his game plan and film of that game will be passed around for 18 weeks. My tip of the Cap to Dak. He showed me he is a top tier QB. My thoughts were if you don’t pay Dak, who’s available and who’s better?
The Cowboys have 10 games in a row with out facing a playoff team from last year. I picked them to win the division just because of a crappy division and soft starting schedule.

This is a sophisticated sports panel ( for the most part) and I want to add some insight to last nights game in case you missed it or didn’t think about. Or am I just a sports junkie because I thought of it immediately and I’m sure no ones mentioned it.
The Bucs were set on kicking the game winning field. Scenario
1st and 10, 10 seconds left. No time outs.
Brady throws three passes into the bench.
    Right move? Ariens call?
Wrong move on each of the 3 plays and I’ll tell you why. First game of the season. Game winner coming up. Guys are a bit twitchy. Oops.
False start is 10 second run off. Game over.

Now im sure Tom told everyone don’t fling move. But still, stranger things have happened.

    Right or wrong and why?

I think as fans we have the ability to look at things differently than the coach.

The coach is in there on the field coaching to win. You trust and prepare these guys to execute when the time comes. Second guessing them is never good. Showing doubt in them overtly or subtly is never good. So you snap it and get the clock where you want to and the ball how you want to and line up the win.

As fans, we often have the pain and memory of losses that these players and coaches don’t and for them, they have to trust themselves and each other and believe that they’re going to do it right.

Especially in week one as it can then become habit forming as the season goes on.

We finish off the game. On our terms.

What if they ran the ball up the middle and they didn’t tackle him until there was not enough time left to set up and spike the ball? I thought it was the smartest thing to do without question. After all
Was said and done they left the Cowboys with 2 seconds on the clock. It was the correct call/s in my opinion

I guess I’m the only one who sees Indians in the bushes. If you kick with 12 seconds left you leave 9 seconds. I would rather explain a miracle loss than a false start at the presser after the game.

couple of randomish thoughts after last night's telecast

i'm not positive about this, but i think 'Ezekiel Elliott' is pronounced 'Le'Veon Bell' in French

i'm already prepared to cast my vote for NFL comeback player of the year. mine goes to Drew Brees' hair

I thought Zeke played a really good game. The game plan was to stay away from the middle of Tampa’s front four. He knew going in his touches would be limited. He never missed a blitz pick up. The one run outside wasn’t old Zeke but all in all without him there were 2 or 3 sacks waiting. I’m definitely not a Cowboys fan but he’ll get his carries. Anyone took him for over 55 yards rushing was asking for trouble.

Zeke is a shell of his former self. the quickness and burst he once had is long gone, never to return. and it's only gonna get worse from here. at this juncture, the only thing saving his career is the offense he's a part of. he'll remain serviceable for that reason, but serviceable doesn't fly when you're one of the highest-paid backs in the league in terms of cap hit in '21.

i suspect he'll be gone in 2023 when he officially becomes a cut candidate

Dak had his best year when Zeke was balling. In this NFL running backs have a shelf life. Jones, attached to all his players is to blame for $80M for Zeke. BB started running back by committee years ago and smart NFL GM’s have followed. There are only a few one back teams and those backs have a shelf life also, we just haven’t seen it yet.

Yes. That has been how the Rams have done it for the last few years. Three running backs. Rotate them in and out as the situation calls for. Those backs get so beat up.

well, it's not off to a good start. the 1 o'clock game I'm forced to watch, the only one I get, is a real groaner --- your Vikings vs. the Bengals, two Teams with nothing who can't seem to get out of their own way. Minnesota started with a penalty and has already had about 4-5 for "false start" with 9:00 left in the 2nd quarter. meanwhile, the Bengals seem determined to show that Joe Burrow is OK yet they won't allow him anything close to contact, running plays, screen passes and two-step drops.

it appears the Vikings will win the battle of ineptitude, though, Cincy is just too, too terrible. Cousins is too accurate and has them at the Bengals 10 yard-line on the verge of scoring.

    go Vike's!!! B)

I just spent the last two hours going through hell watching my cats play, but my Panthers pulled it off and beat the Jets 19-14, it must feel good for Sam Darnold to get some payback against his old team. Just look at what the stress of watching the Panthers does to me, my living room.

I thought the Eagles looked good, the Giants did not, and with Fitz down I think the NFC East is already - after one week - a two horse race between Philly and the Cowboys.

(I’m a Giants fan who wonders why we don’t understand that with no offensive line, you can’t win. I mean, we’re going on a decade here, Blue.)

How did Jones look in your opinion? Were the OLine problems a big part of how you see him, or is it him? Or both? :) I'm curious. I have not kept up with him and the Giants much over the off season. From what I remember, he had a huge issues with turnovers, particularly fumbles.

I'm left wondering when the NFL, game officials and the review booth are going to start getting the un-sportsman-like conduct calls correct. there needs to be a way to stop penalizing the "reaction" and to start penalizing the "instigator" of these things. the officials clearly don't want to call the penalty on both Teams so they defer almost universally to giving it to the responding player/Team. a compromise, in anything but the most egregious cases, might be to give a warning to both Teams and to the offending players so that anything more will result in an ejection.

the play from Sunday's Browns vs. Chiefs game highlighted this and the announcers all overlooked the fact that 2-3 coaches from the Chiefs involved themselves in the post-tackle event. the Browns player was ejected, rightfully so, but he was reacting to the fact that a Chiefs coach had pushed him. that guy will probably be fined by the NFL, why no ejection for him??

we see this every week in multiple games and the NFL struggles with it annually. it seemed clear from what I saw yesterday that the NFL isn't really intent on doing anything about taunting, it's just lip service.

I only watched the second half of the Bills/Steelers game and that one really just came down to Pittsburgh making the plays that they needed to where Buffalo didn't. I was surprised to see three contenders in TENN,BUF & GB all pretty much came out and laid eggs, two of them at home.

The only reason that all 4 NFL West Division teams won't make the playoffs is because they have to play each other twice......somebody has to lose.

I enjoyed the game last night. Of course, it's easier when you don't have a dog in the fight ( other than my Giants pick for the contest here, but no real rooting interest). The Giants looked to be a poorly coached team. Their mistakes certainly cost them the game. But it was a nice back and forth contest.
