First time EVER on Ebay . . . .

ZoidMeisterZoidMeister Posts: 3,120 ✭✭✭✭✭

So I was watching a group lot of coins on Ebay. There were five in total but I only needed one of them. The price per coin was very reasonable, but again, I only needed one.

It was an auction with a "make an offer" option. A bit unusual, but whatever. I watched this auction for several weeks. No one bid on it week after week.

Opening bid was $125 - $25 per coin. I would probably have paid $50 for the one I wanted, but this was a full set of items and I didn't want to insult the seller by asking him to break up the set.

So I tendered an offer - $90. It was immediately rejected - one of those auto rejects. Sheesh.

So I let another week or so go by.

Still available, no opening bids.

This time I offered $95. Again it was immediately rejected - auto reject.

I was determined to get the piece that I needed. I've seen it before, something languishes for weeks with no opening bids. I place one bid, then all of the "watchers" come out of the woodwork and drive the price beyond what I will absorb for the ONE piece that I wanted.

So I sleep on it.

The next morning I make a full opening bid offer - $125. I wait. Nothing, no auto accept. I gave up.

Later that day I received notice of a counter offer from the seller. Of course, he knew that I was interested, I figured he wanted to bump me up a little from opening bid. Heck, if I sniped the listing a few seconds before it closed, at least I could get it for opening bid. I wasn't hopeful.

I waited a few hours before checking the counter offer . . . .

What? I offered $125, the counter offer was for $100 . . . . !!

Hail, immediate accept and pay . . . .

The group lot is on its way to me . .

There's a first time for EVERYTHING . . .

The only thing I can think of is that he wanted a quick sale.

Once I also watched an auction where no one bid for a couple cycles. There was a best offer option so I offered what was the opening bid and he accepted.

LOL 1 time I received an offer for more than my fixed price listing! I accepted it knowing it was a mistake just for giggles...and yes got an immediate request to cancel the order!

eBay isn't what it used to be. Very few "auctions" really are auctions. What happened in this case was truly odd.

Not really sure what happened here but am glad you got it for the $100.00 price.

The really weird part is that he could have countered at any point with the lower price. I'm wondering if he didn't do a typo on his end, and then felt obligated to go through with it after I accepted and PAID . . . . . .

It will not auto accept an auction offer at the opening bid.

Here is to hoping you get what you think you are getting. Forgive me, but I'm always skeptical.

Well that is different.... I hope it works out and you get exactly what was offered in the lot. Let us know... Cheers, RickO

I never seem to have luck with offers, but I keep trying. Having a seller counter for a lower price then the offer... That I have never seen before lol

I remember I REALLY wanted this gold coin with a buy it now that was pretty outrageous. I kept offering and kept getting rejected. I finally sent an offer with a message this is my final offer not a penny more. No response.... So I went 5 dollars more from that offer and he accepted. I was quite surprised

    Here is the final product:

Sometimes I think you've just gotta hit them with an offer after they've had a few beers or when the mortgage, rent, or car insurance is due . . . .

    Twice in one week!

Same result, different scenario, different seller . . . .

Several weeks ago, a seller had a piece listed for $150 Buy it Now, but had the "make an offer" open.

So I offered $120, which he declined - no counter offer.

A few weeks later (last week) the same seller listed the same item up for auction. Opening bid was $49.

I set up my snipe, knowing there would be last hour competition.

    I won the auction at $92 . . . .

He should have accepted my offer. He wrote me saying I got a steal of a deal. Tracking says it should be here by Friday.

A few months back I sent an offer on something hoping to get $5 off the buy it now. The seller countered with $10 above the Buy it Now. I declined that and put in a bid at the opening price. I was the only one who bid and won it at 1 dollar more than my original offer.

And what’s the rest of the story!?

  • clarkbar04clarkbar04 Posts: 4,973 ✭✭✭✭✭

In an auction with an obo you’re ideally supposed to offer ABOVE the opening bid, otherwise there’s no compelling reason to end it early. You should get rejected 100% of the time this way.

I can’t explain the counter at 100 other than bourbon exists.

Meh, the story was better than the actual pieces. The five coin set was a group of Ron Landis hobo nickels. I just needed the caboose to complete the train. Now I have a few spares for "trade fodder" although I seem to never part with anything once I get it. It's very sad actually.
