1909S VDB for grading

Steven59Steven59 Posts: 8,320 ✭✭✭✭✭

With all of the counterfeit post lately on the 1909S VDB cent I was thinking about finally getting mine slabbed. So before I send it off I'd like to get a consensus of what grade it may come back with.

    I bought this coin in 2007, specifically for the "High" rims - it made all the fields and details seem "deep" into the coins surface - probably a bunch of crap but I haven't found a strike like this since.

    Kinda thinking this coin might have been encased? Would explain the extra thick rims.
    The coin overall looks funny to me though. Sharp lettering near the rim but a softly struck bust of Lincoln. The closeups show some fine pitting. Not saying it isnt real, but just because the mintmark might be in the right place doesnt mean authentic.
    The best counterfeits are made using the real thing as a guide. Just saying.

    If you send it in, ask them to dip it to get rid of those green specks. Nice coin/strike.

    For a circulated coin, it looks to have some decent mint luster in the fields.

    When I owned that coin it was sold to me as an EF 45. ahhh well, maybe not that particular one, but one exactly like it. ANACS 1978 EF45

    The luster alone I think puts it in AU territory. It has nice fields but the dark color on the lower part of the obverse will probably keep it out of a 62 holder. I think it will easily be in an AU slab. 58 wont surprise me. It's a nice coin.

    Nice coin... if that's mint luster in the devices, it would likely go AU-something...

    At first glance with the luster I thought mid AU, but after looking at wear I believe XF45 would be the grade most likely given by graders. Maybe AU50 on a great day.

    @LanceNewmanOCC -
    During summertime, fishing takes preference over coins so I put it back in the Dansco and forgot about it. I have a few other cents in there I want to have graded eventually but I'm in no hurry. (the unc 55 DDO in the middle of the other 2 is the tribute coin from Grove Mint)
