What coin did you want as a kid? Did you get it?

For me, it was a 3 legged buffalo, and I've owned several as an adult. What was your dream coin? Did you get it?

I can't think of one in particular.
1909-s VDB Lincoln and 1921 Peace Dollar.
And...........Yes!!!! I did!
1918-D 8/7 5c. I cherrypicked several. No way could I afford to buy one.
Wanted an 09 S VDB cent. Was afraid to get one due all of the fakes out there. Once TPGs came around, I realized that while popular, they aren't all that rare. I did not think I'd get my money's worth buying one, still done, and never did get one.

Indian Cent. Yes I did many of them in fact.
A gold coin and yes.
1793 Strawberry, no, not even close.
1955 DDO and yes, I've owned a couple.
As a kid my dream coin was a Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. Bought my first and only in my early 30s.
1950-D Jefferson and no, I never found one. Found plenty of war nickels and 1938 D & S and 1939 D & S effs but never a 50-D.
it's crackers to slip a rozzer the dropsy in snide
One of mine was a 1917 S Obverse Walker. I own a 64, now.
The Draped Bust Dollar was another. Don't think I'll ever own an 1804 but I will likely pick up another date in high grade, someday.

I wanted them all. I certainly haven’t bought them all, lol. Probably the most realistic one I wanted as a kid would be a St Gaudens $20 and I have one.
Only rare coin I ever heard of as a kind was the 09 S VDB and no I’ve moved on to gold and IHC.
"I spent 50% of my money on alcohol, women, and gambling. The other half I wasted.
As a kid looking through my redbook I was always entranced by the no stars 1796 $2.50 and a small eagle bust dollar. I have the dollar, but needless to say not the quarter eagle.
When I was a kid in the 1950's my grandmother was a coin collector who hoped to find a 1955 double-die in circulation. She mentioned it several times and I was curious about it.
When I started collecting later, my interest was world coins.

Draped Bust dollar with the clouds like the 1804 (in the Blue Book).
First I got a half dollar.
Then eventually I sprung for a dollar.
Back around 1961-62 my grandmother would regularly get together with half a dozen ladies her age to play a game called Pokeeno, a card game played with nickels. It was not unusual to see Buffalo nickels in circulation back then. They were aware of a 3 legged nickel that was, they said, worth $5. I always wanted one. I now have an MS62 that I cherried for $250 in 2000.
A new1909 VDB. And yes.
As a very young kid trying to fill whatever holes I could in my 2 Blue Whitman Penny books of course my Holy Grail was the 09-S VDB. Several years later, I fulfilled that dream. That is what started the madness.
I remember looking though my grandpas red book and seeing the 42 over 41 dime… I thought it was soooo cool. I’ve not owned one, but maybe one day.
It's all about what the people want...
Draped Bust Half Eagle, and yes... by a few.
An NJ copper first caught my eye in 3rd grade, and I finally bought one the weekend after I graduated college. That's probably the best example, though there are certainly others I wanted as a kid but couldn't afford, and have subsequently bought. That said, a chain cent is still on my list--always has been--and I imagine it'll be a while longer before I find one I like and am willing to pay for.
As a kid I was happier with a coin in G rather than spending the money on a higher grade. While in college I spent all of my money from a summer job on a 1877 Indian head, 1918/7-D buffalo and three legged nickel, 1901-S Barber Quarter, and started sets of everything dating back to Barbers and on including silver dollars. It didn't take that much money then and at some point I realized all these coins take up a lot of space and weight. Plus, I was going back to school in the fall. Sold them all after college and concentrated on exceptional quality stamps instead. The "ghost" fifth leg on the three legged nickel bothered me and I questioned whether mine was a fake so I just got rid of it. The storefront dealer I was buying from was not the most ethical and at one time tried to sell me a fake 1909-S VDB. Much later I sold all of my stamps and am now collecting better grade coins. I found a great mentor and TPG and CAC have a lot do do with that.
1909 S VDB Lincoln and 1909 S Indian Head Cent. Unfortunately, not at the same time nor in the same condition.

I have at least three 1950-D nickels that I collected from change when I was young........interesting part?.......I had no idea that they were special. Actually,..... even now I really don't think that they are special. No big deal.
The '50-D was the only one I couldn't find when I assembled a set back in the sixties.
I bought one of them. Wish I didn't.
"Seu cabra da peste,
"Sou Mangueira......."
Me too......
As a kid, I dreamed of owning a 1909 S VDB Lincoln Cent, 1916 D Mercury Dime and a 1932 D Washington Quarter. I got all of them, and still have them.
1799 cent...and no, I haven't ever bought one.
I cherried a 1799 in Fair02 condition in an NGC slab misattributed as a 1798 a few years back. Thank you, NGC!
I guess I was just lucky and didn't know it. The three 50-D nickels that I picked up were during the mid 60's/ 70's. Like I said in my other post, I had no idea they were anything special.
I ended up buying a circulated example, VF or so.
I didn’t even know what Bust gold was or for that matter Bust anything when I was a kid. It took me 50+ years but I finally have a 09-S VDB, 55 DDO, and a three legged Buffalo. They’re not rare but I enjoy looking at them. I think I’ll pass on the 16-D.
I remember wanting a 09s vdb and also a copper 1943 Lincoln. I ended up getting the 09s vdb just about 12 years ago. The closest I got to the copper 1943 Lincoln was when I was about 10 my older brother bought me some electronic science experiment kits and I plated one with copper. It came out ok looking except where the electronic clip held the coin. I have no idea where it ended up though. I still have my Lincoln sets that started in Whitman folders and are now in Albums, but I don’t know what happened to the plated 43.

1909-s VDB Lincoln cent, but never got one
I never found a 1950-D nickel after much roll searching. And I was searching in 1961. After about 1974 I gave up roll searching for many years.
I always wanted a $3 gold coin. I finally got an 1855 from Gerry Fortin a few years ago after wanting it for about 50 years.
I wanted a couple of nice type sets, and a whole mess of draped bust quarters and halves.
Yeah, I got 'em

1995 doubled die cent. I got one in 2019.
The 1856 Flying Eagle Cent. No, and not really on my list anymore.
Draped bust half when I was 11. It was a coin I could eventually afford. No, I never bought one. I moved on
As a kid, a Morgan dollar was my holy grail coin.... A dollar was a lot of money, so tying it up in a collectible was an important decision. Well... I finally got them - yes, many of them... even the CC series. I still like the big silver coin. Cheers, RickO
I too wanted a 1909 S VDB as my Great Grandmother collected coins in the 1930s and 1940s in California. She supposedly had complete collections of Barbers and Walkers and knew to collect by condition - I don't know what happened to any of the other coins besides her set of Lincoln wheaties which my dad got. He had them in an old push-in board but pulled all they keys out besides the 1931S and sold them in the early 60s. I remember he bought an SLR Minolta camera in 1967 which cost about 110 dollars with the proceeds from the 1909 S VDB sale (she got her coins from circulation only). I think the 1910 S fell out because it was gone also, but of course the 1909 S, 1914D, 1922 no D, 1924D were not there, but it was the 1909 S coins that I wanted.
SO I had a set with holes on nearly all the keys, but the one that I wanted most was the S VDB. I got the 09S in a local auction 30 years ago (looks to be AU55) but could not get the S VDB as the outlay seemed a stretch for what it was as I too had figured out that it was not all that rare.
Finally, since I collect Brit coins, saw one come up in the "Foreign Coins" section of a Brit auction about 5 years ago, so bid on it and won a nice looking coin at a not insubstantial 1200 USD. It graded with our hosts at MS64RB and totally original surfaces and a very nice coin. So I had my coin and do like it a lot - finally.
Well, just Love coins, period.
Me too and no not yet😢

1918 Lincoln-Illinois commemorative half with colorful toning. My local coin shop had one, but it was $18 and far beyond the reach of a 6 year old kid with a 50-cent weekly allowance in 1959. Today I have a dozen, but none has the appeal of that one I could not afford. Rosebud. LOL
Commems and Early Type
As a 7 year old I collected Mercury Dimes from circulation, also had a Redbook and was fascinated with the 1796 dime with the low mintage and beautiful design. Yes, I did get a 1796 dime 40 years later, along with dates 1796-1807 less the 1804.
Like others... 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent and I've owned two since I was a kid. The first one completed the Wheat Cent Series for me after many many years... and it was sort of anti-climactic. The second one, I chose the best of the three I was presented at a show... then it dawned on me that these really aren't all that "rare"...
One of the other coins I drooled over in my early collecting years was a 1796 Quarter... yeah.. right!!
