What is your dream coin?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,007 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm not talking about a coin that is simply unobtainable or one that doesn't exist. I am speaking specifically about a coin that you CAN acquire- you're just looking for that quintessential "perfect" example.

There isn't one. I have a list of specific coins from my series I am interested in eventually buying, 49 specific coins I have identified, mostly ones I do not own but some upgrades.

1909 VDB Matte Proof. Somewhat unobtainable because of the price tag but one can dream. I'd take a 1909 Matte Proof as a place holder though.

1807 Capped Bust half. MS+. I just keep watching for the right one.....I'm too picky......I've passed on several good ones. I've been to late to the rodeo on others. One of these days I'll snag a winner.

    A perfectly struck, high-grade 1921 Peace dollar.

Or, at least one in the top 1% in terms of strike detail, to keep it realistic.

I'd be real happy with an 1856 Flying Eagle PCGS MS65 with a green bean. But I'll just have to settle for pictures, they're alot cheaper :)

Tough question. Most of what I want I already have or is outside my price range...if it was in my price range I would have bought it already. Granted, I have a self imposed $20 limit.

I just decided I wanted to do a type set a few weeks ago, so I'm sure that will give me something to shoot for eventually, once I really dig into it.

I'm much more into world coins but I have much less knowledge on them. I likely don't know what I want until I see it.

I do want to get a denarius of Marcus Aurelius at some point.

Taking out the price factor, a Saint Gaudens $20 is my most wanted but they are well above my price range and likely will never enter my collection.

I am not seeking anything specific at this time. More in the 'buy what attracts me' mode of collecting. If I had to name one I would like to get, it would be the UHR St. Gaudens. Cheers, RickO

I really love this one - but any coin in the 5 figures and I’d be out of the ‘casual fun hobby’ zone in my brain - so I keep moving along - moving along - but who knows … I’m getting old now … lol

I don't buy coins in this price range either but for five figures, the US coin I want most is a nice AU $20 Territorial gold, In the mid-four figures, a nice AU draped bust half.

However, even if I ever complete my primary set, there are other coins I would rather own, such as a Judean First Jewish Revolt shekel.

I'd rather own a Russian Imperial Faberge Easter Egg for near the same money. Or maybe two or more. Also would prefer an apartment at Albert Court in Kensington, London and still have $10MM left over.

I’ll stick to coins I once owned and wish I never sold, there are two. PCGS MS62 1889-CC Morgan or $50 Octagon NGC VF35. I don’t care which one.

@cnncoins made a PCGS MS67 about a dozen years ago that I sold to a anonymous Forum member. It was hammered.

That was Kevin Lipton's description of it at lot pick-up the next day. Few here beyond Chris might understand the depth and nuances of Kevin's tone when he muttered "Ryan must have bought it... (pause) He probably didn't think I would pay up for the strike. He was right! :# Every sentence in that quote had multiple emojis

PCGS / NGC Pre 1891 Maundy sets that are brilliant but uncleaned. Toning really ruins these at their size.

I collect world crowns with chopmarks by type; there is a unique chopmarked Hawaiian Dala pedigreed back to the Rose Collection, plated in his book. There are a lot of great coins out there I would like to add to my set, but to me that would be the crown jewel.

I'm keeping mine! Problem-free, hard steel-gray PCGS VG08. Even though the pricing on these has gone up in the last year or so, I just wouldn't let go of it.

In US, this is my white whale, albeit one I won't be bidding on: 1795 $5 S/D, with this being the finest certified example:

    https://coins.ha.com/itm/early-half-eagles/half-eagles/1795-5-small-eagle-s-over-d-bd-6-r5-ms65-prooflike-ngc-pcgs-519855-/p/1333-12001.s?ic4=GalleryView-ShortDescription-071515

For my main collection (ancients), happily, I already have most/all of my "dream coins". There are many more that will add to the breadth of my collection but I wouldn't call them dream coins as I'm patiently waiting for the right examples.

It's a good place to be, or perhaps I need to be more aggressive in my dreaming...

The proof 69 deep cameo 1959 Franklin half. Pop 1. No photos available.
I'll assume it is the same coin that I held in my hand and could purchase for about $7000 way back before 2005 at a show near Detroit. Back then, there were few deep cameo 1959 Franklins in PCGS holders and the one presented to me did not look right. Instead of snow white frost, the frost was more light grey. Unlike any dcam Franklin I had ever seen before - or since. I politely passed as it looked artificial to my eye.

Fast forward 15+ years - no more 69 dcams have emerged so I suspect that lone coin is sitting in someone's safe. Price guide has it at $35,000 but I'd still pass today.

All that said, if the '59 in 68 dcam is the real deal - I'd much rather have that coin.
