Musings for my 1000th post.

I'm not very prolific. I had 10,000 posts in less time on a Tolkien message board years ago, but I was younger and dumber then. The dumber part may not have changed much....

I was waiting to post a photo of some pretty new coin I'd purchased, but the fact is, I rarely ever buy anything, and when I do, it's usually some random thing for an album that I'd be embarrassed to show all of you compared to the amazing things I see here and at work. I bought a holed 1827 Large Cent today for my album. It's dreck.

I have a hard time getting excited anymore. I still love coins, but how do I get excited to spend $500 on a nice coin of my own to put in a safe when I'll see half a dozen coins worth more than my new car each day at work next week? I saw some fun ngc slabbed Buffalo's in high 65/66 grades today that I'm debating because I started a Library of Coins album and want to do all uncirculated so these would be great to crack out and put in there. They're all under $100 each so I could get a couple for a reasonable price. At the end of the day though, they're widgets to me. I'm not a buffalo collector really. I just like albums.

Truly the only thing that really excites me lately has been Libertas Americana tokens, and Soviet banknotes. Talk about random stuff that is impossible to find other than hunting online for hours on end.

On the other hand, I've met some really great people here that I consider friends, and got myself a job! Finding this site was truly life changing for me and a lot of you contributed to that. If you hadn't been so helpful to a newbie like me I never would have continued collecting coins, let alone got a career photographing them.

So I guess what I'm saying is, I may not show off coins very often anymore or even add to my collection, but I'm still here reading and learning.

Since I feel like I should show something, here's a few of my coins you've probably seen before. :D

    Congratulations on post #1000

All of what you posted is interesting and worthy of a collector with an eye. Very attractive and I'm sure each has a story as well.

I think it is dangerous to compare the quality of the pieces we collect. If I compared my collection to that of others, and having the same quality was the most important factor, I would just quit. In fact, the poster right above me has mouth watering examples he has shown here. I don't compete with him. I enjoy the comradery he has by sharing on this board.

There's a thread recently about enjoyment of the hobby. So many aspects to feel good about ... comparing what I can and have been able to do, and what someone else can and has been able to do is not one of them for me.

I sometimes wonder where the examples I own have been ... where they came from, and who their caretakers were. Was one from a famous collector who found a better one, but the history mine has is lost ... or was it squirreled away in a forgotten coffee tin, or dresser drawer, or old coat pocket for years and years?

I wonder where some of yours have been ...

“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

    1000 post strong 💪

Nothing wrong with a little dreck , we all have our own interests and all together that makes for an interesting collectors universe!

Here is a modern 2oz Intaglio mint Libertas Americana that spent a little time in my pocket…

Congrats on 1000! I did notice you don’t post as often as you once did. I always enjoy reading your threads.

Such a nice group of medals and coins. I really love the copper, being partial to Lincoln’s and all. Great job on the photos as usual. I hope we can see more of your very diverse collection.

Many of you know @SiriusBlack . He has made an impression on many of us. But for those of you who don't know him, he is very humble and a great friend.

Congrats on reaching a thousand. You have some nice coins.
The slab of the $5 needs a drop of clear oil on it before photographing it, it would help get rid of that distracting line across her face. That is a great XF45!

Welcome to the 1000 club! There’s nothing to be ashamed about those coins, they’re great!

Thank you everyone for the kind words, it’s always encouraging!

Definitely need to polish that OGH someday to get rid of the lines, true!

I didn’t even post any banknote photos, but I spent a little time searching online last night for more. Didn’t realize there were so many options on Etsy. Not a lot of unc stuff, but fun to hunt and cheap enough that I can upgrade later if I really want to with out much cost penalty.

@SiriusBlack You joined here around when I did. I have enjoyed your contributions quite a bit. I would not have so many comments, other than the fact that I spend so much time in the wild West known as Sports Talk.

I have seen newcomers to this forum hesitate to contribute or feel out of place due to a misconception that it is only for those who play in the deep end. But the reality is that it is a place for those with passion, heart, and a lot of kindness. There is so much giving done here, of information and support. You might have to search for it, or stay long enough to see it, but it is there.

I don't comment or contribute as much as I should, but I get a lot out of this place.

Congratulations on your post milestone, career in coins, photography, and coin photography, and nice group of items shown, I've enjoyed your contributions to the forum.

I also think you're on a good track in picking fun, interesting, and hard to find coins and notes to collect, and realizing that it's the assemblage that forms a collection, lets have a look at that large cent album! (And the coins flanking it)

Sounds like you're developing a good eye for Quality (heh, developing lol) by seeing and imagining so many high end pieces, that will be a huge asset later in your numismatic years

Very nice coins. I have been collecting 45 years and so entrenched in my own little niche, never payed much attention to anything else. Alas, after joining the forum I realized how blissfully ignorant I was of the all of the passion, knowledge and comaraderie I have missed out on. While there is very little posted about my area of interest, I am now drawn nearly every day to read and learn. Joining the forum and seeing coins like you posted is truly educational and has been enlightening to me as well

Hey @SiriusBlack , great post, stuff to be proud with, AND for getting Dr Bones to post his only 11th message here in almost 11 months. Says something about the content ehh?
