Interesting, and great correspondence
BHNC #203
makes me wonder if they were split flans, ragged edge clips, clamshells, various lamination issues.
Bad Alloy Mixes?

Pictures or it didn't happen - LOL!
FWIW, many years ago, I spoke with Jon Danreuther about specific dates of Liberty Nickels. He told me I'd have a much easier time finding an all there gem 1889 piece than one minted in 1888. He went on to say that they often weren't struck well.
"Seu cabra da peste,
"Sou Mangueira......."
most likely. or some improper heat treatment. (i don't know much about that process but figure there are ways to do it wrong) perhaps even cooling improperly.
but if there was really "crumbling", most likely the mixture.
would impressions be acceptable.
Great post. Thank you

Really interesting correspondence.... Would really like to see what the anomaly looked like... Not possible of course, but interesting to speculate. Cheers, RickO
