An Old Fart with a New Hobby

HenryOHenryO Posts: 80 ✭✭✭

By way of introduction.....
I am 59 years old just in the past year rediscovering a fascination with old US coins. I remember as a kid finding the odd mercury dime or buffalo nickel in pocket change. One time actually found a 1903 Liberty nickel handed to me as change at a local store......Years passed, step kids from my first marriage pilfered my little collection, and the interest lay dormant until last year when my 12 year old son was showing me some old wheat backs he had discovered still in circulation. One thing led to another and I was buying Indian head pennies etc. on Ebay. I thought I might flip a few for a profit to help support starting to collect. Bought "Mega Red" book, some folders and off I go. I have a lot to learn, and a low budget but having fun with it!
I found 10 uncirculated 1932 Washington Quarters in an old folder that I hope might have a couple decent grades to help out a little in supporting a reinvigorated interest.

Holy Cow! Great find on the WQs. Might we have obverse and reverse images of each?

    Welcome back to the hobby.

What a great way to rediscovery the hobby! I hope it's something you can share with your son!

    Welcome to the fold @HenryO

Nice Washington's, although I wouldn't grade the ones you've pictured in the second round (those appear to be AU58 to MS63) ... and great to hear you are getting some enjoyment in the hobby with your Son! Good luck on your results for the ones you sent in!!

Thanks Todd, I will be interested to see how my novice estimate of grade will work out. I am the eternal optimist, my son keeps telling me to lower my expectations. I'm hoping the first one I pictured might go 66? Of course 67 would be a lovely jackpot but I dont really expect it.

By the way, love your merc icon. They have always been one of my favorite us coins.

:) Thanks Henry ... one of my all time favorites too ... although I am much more into Bust coinage these days.

Your first picture is tough to grade. First, three sides to the coin, and I only see one ;) and it's just enough out of focus that the right field gives me pause ... but based on some extrapolation I think that has a shot at 65 if the reverse s clean. I'll hope you get better than that.

Thanks for your input. I will be glad when I can temper some of my optimism with experience. I did write down my best guess on the 8 I submitted so I could get some more experience. Comparing to other photos (photograde) and reading about grading criteria is one thing. Seeing how it actually comes out will be another. I don't know why I hesitated so long in jumping into this forum. It seems there are some good folks here willing to help out a new guy.

Glad you are here Henry. In my opinion, this is absolutely the right place for someone who wants to learn and grow in the hobby!

    :)

There are quite a few Washington guys here, and one of the preeminent experts @TomB chimed in right away. I'm sure if you ask and listen, you will find an enormous wealth of information on anything you want to collect ... and from a whole bunch of good people.

I'm going to send you a PM with a couple pictures for reference for what I think are strong Gem WQ's

@HenryO.... Welcome aboard. Looks like you have a good start to your hobby return. We look forward to seeing your grades... Will be interesting to see what grade you assigned and what each one received. Do not be discouraged if they are not what you thought... we all have our missed opinions on grades. Cheers, RickO

Very nice coins. You may get the grades you want. But don't be discouraged if you don't. Many of us, myself included, look back at our first submissions as a learning experience rather than a profitable venture. I did have some that came back at or near what I expected. But not all. Continue to participate in boards like this. It will cut your learning curve by 50-80%.

I actually never knew this coin existed until a year ago. My boy, who was 11 at the time, told me he had heard about them at school.
