I always under grade these coins in the circulated grades. I would have though EF as well. There must be some luster that is not showing in the photos.
For this issue and this issue only, a poor strike is not in the equation.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
.
is this closer to the in-hand look or it is spot-on from your images. i could see it making 50 from a color closer to the below images where some luster still shows through.

I'd say XF-40, maybe 45.
It looks like a 40......
XF40 IMO.

40/45 from photos, not seeing any signs of cleaning.
XF45. Judging from the previous posts I must be grading it like it was my own.
Why is anyone writing cleaned or possibly cleaned? I see nothing other than what is likely circulation marks. Nice coin.

This is an old thread, but I had the coin graded and just got it back:
AU 50 would not have been my guess.
I was going with an XF 40.
Nice grade on a ‘17.

VF20 if you're trying to sell it, XF40 if you're trying to buy it.
I was thinking 40 based on the OP pictures.... Maybe in hand.... Cheers, RickO
