Guesses won't offend me. DWN and True view confirm the grade for me.

I’ll guess AU58 and not CAC.

EF-45 and yes CAC
55 and yes.
AU58 and CAC
Mr_Spud
I don't know. But it's lovely.
High end AU so I'll guess AU58. I have no idea what CAC would say but I like this coin.

My first Classic Head Half Eagle. I liked it a lot too.

Welcome to the forum. Here’s a PCGS XF45:

So, probably better than a XF45

55 came to mind first.
Love it but I see too much field wear for 58, so I’ll go 55 ...with the sticker
I think 55 w/sticker
55 with sticker. Nice coin!

That’s the problem with trying to guess a grade and whether a coin has been stickered (at that particular grade).
While I guessed 58, no sticker, if it were graded 55, I’d sticker it.

I like it. I’d say 55 and CAC.

AU50 and probably cac's. I love it, except for that ugly green sticker. Congrats!

It is my start for the Classic Head Half Eagles. Being an 8 coin set, I think I can do it.

My thoughts too. The first is always the most remembered.

Pretty Coin, Gonna guess 58
Wouldn’t be surprised to see it in a 55 Holder, would be a buyer at both grades
I agree. Looks original and not messed with.

I’m with the 58 crowd. In any case, it looks like a wonderful example of a series that’s often not especially attractive!
I'm with the Spudster... and anyone should be proud to own it. Nice looking piece of history.

I was kind of considering keying in on the same series also once I knocked off the "Big Kahuna" the other day. Not anywhere as nice the one in the OP but have the 1838-C HM-2 variety now. I'm not going to be dropping $30K+ on the Charlotte coin alone. This one will have to do and sure I'll be submitting to our hosts shortly.
Looks to be in the EF range. I must note you asked us to guess the grade, and not the numbers used on the holder, which I suspect are higher.

53, yes CAC
The most common variety (HM-1) for the date. So much early gold has been messed with. This one seemed to be left alone. I have enjoyed reading D. Haynor's book on Classic Gold Coins of 1834-1839. If you are into gold coins from that era, I suggest you give it a read.
TrueView pictures are always nice but this Dealer shot brings out the luster seen when viewing in hand.

Where do you see enough wear on the coin to merit an XF, rather than a high AU grade?
That aside, “guess the grade” actually does mean “the numbers used on the holder” assigned by the grading company. That can differ from your personal opinion regarding the grade of the coin, as it did for you in this case.

Late to the game.... but a nice gold coin. Cheers, RickO
The 1838-C Five Dollar Gold pieces were not that well made, and they almost all well circulated. They also are not usually very attractive. That piece is a little above average and should make it into a VF-30 to EF-40 holder. My personal grade would be on the lower end of that because it does have a number of marks on the obverse.
Here' is my example, which I have been told is the 7th finest known. And no, it was not cheap. It is the same variety as you piece with the massive reverse die break. NGC graded it AU-58. The "official grade" among the experts in AU-55.
That’s a really nice looking coin. I would have guessed 55 CAC, but considering how most of these look 58 CAC seems OK.
A nice AU58 seems to be the sweet spot for this series. Most coins in the MS60-62 range are a bit rough and lack eye appeal. Prices get pretty nasty above that.
I’m in the market for a type coin and looked at a bunch in the Stacks auction and at dealers tables at the Vegas invitational. There was a 55 CAC in the auction and the OP’s coin appears to be considerably nicer. I saw a lustrous 55 at a dealer’s table but it had a pretty distracting hit.
Still looking.....
@BillJones , that is an exceptional Charlotte Classic $5!
I picked this one up with VF20-VF25 in mind and paid a very safe price at that, so I'd be doing the victory dance at that lower end. I'm only concerned that they may tack a details designation as almost any of these circulated pieces have been messed with to some degree. Color actually looks even better in hand and mostly looks like contact and wear marks and exhibits the usual weak strike.
Your coin is exceptionally beautiful for all the reasons you mention. Congratulations, and I'd say enjoy owning it but I really don't think that's necessary.
Mark
It is so nice to hear that you enjoy reading my book. Hopefully more collectors will become familiar with the Class Gold series. You found a very nice coin, I agree with the 58 grade. It is an early die state coin because there are no die clashes on the obverse. And it shows some typical weakness of strike on the upper stars, which may have led some to guess 55. Good luck on completing the series and please contact me if you wish to discuss anything about Classic Gold.
OP's name is pcgscacgold and we are guessing if the pcgs graded gold coin he has, or he is interested in, has a cac sticker?
Love it.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Your book is an incredible resource and I would be lost without it. I am a quarter of the way to the 8 basic coin Half Eagle set. My other coin is an HM-1 1837. Thanks for the offer to talk Classic Gold. I will take you up on that.
