PSA 7 OPC Ryan/Koosman sold for 20k with the juice last night in memory lane auction I believe is a new record for the grade while a Topps PSA 8 sold for a little over 19k in the same auction! High grade Ryan rookies in huge demand right now.

I think you are right about the OPC ryan in psa 7. I have not seen one go for over $20k
both OPC and Ryan are very very strong right now.
I also saw that a PSA 8 topps ryan rookie with a 10 sig sold for $116k!?!?!? i dont understand the huge draw the signed rookies are right now. that is a $20k card with a $150 dollar sig from the nolan ryan foundation. why on earth would anyone spend more than $21k on that? it is a mystery tome

I think it's really hard to get an 8/10 from PSA so that's why.
Vintage on-card auto is a niche market which is exploding as tons more collectors have entered that space over the past 3-5 years. Prices have doubled in the last year almost across the board, but the tough vintage is soaring right now.
I looked at the one you mentioned and I didn't think it was a strong 8 or a really nice signature, but lots of buyers. most of my ebay stuff gets purchased at BiN the last 6 months or so. Must be a wave of new collectors.

That grey back Raines is an awesome card. Pop 2 I think. My guess is- 3k+ Love to hear what others think.....

There's still an outsized demand for signed Ryan cards for as long as he's willing to do so. If he's already signed so many, then why do the prices continue to rise? The only bags to hold have more cash coming from wealthy investors, same as anything else that's red hot these days. I don't anticipate a significant drop in interest for Ryan cards, only a further scramble for whatever stays available after he passes away someday. And I did not say soon.

I agree, Ryan has the highest demand amongst pitchers, and probably by far. I also agree that there will most likely not be any drop in interest in his cards. I anticipate his cards on a continuing upward trend as he really seems to be the Mantle of pitchers.
I guess i question if many of these buyers realize that the $100k premium they paid for that auto card in reality is worth the price to grade/authenticate it, the $150 fee to the ryan foundation and return shipping. it is absurd. He has signed a TON of autos. and continues to do so. I dont know if it is quite to the level of Feller or Rose, but he lives in the same ballpark as those two.

my preference is the overall appearance of the card with the signature. I don't care so much about the grades as I do in how well it all came together. Ryan signs a lot, and he has a lot of fans out there... while many of them look similar, some are just special. some don't.
to that point, on many of my registry sets I don't put my best grade out. I put the card I think looks the best.

Yeah, the grading standards have all but eliminated the chance for 10's on key OPC cards. I think this Gwynn would have had a 50/50 shot at a 10 in the past. Very pleased with it regardless.

Hi John- I was fortunate to find it at a card show last year here in Canada. It was with other singles from what looked like a set break. This was by far the best of the bunch. You never know what you will find at a show!

As many of you likely remember, the 1973 Schmidt PSA 10 sold on eBay (My 6th) for over $70k, is now up for sale on Heritage. This card is clearly short and trimmed. The Ozzie Smith PSA 10 is also back up for sale on eBay🤦♂️

Perhaps the who cant be bothered to gain the knowledge deserve to be fleeced. In this case by HA who clearly know its been trimmed.

Will they even be fleeced? These trimmed cards do not sell at a discount, they just go uppa. The only risk is PSA removes the cert, but as if.
Presumably the guys buying this card have eyes and can see it is short and don’t care.
Similar to stocks, everyone knows the SpaceX market cap is a joke, it’s all speculation and everyone is in on it (until they aren’t).

What is the tolerance on the height of a early 70s Topps card? PSA sent one card back to me minsize that is very slightly shorter than other cards I have from the same year. They also sent a card back to me minsize that is exactly the same size as other cards they holdered from around the same time period.
They also sent me back a bunch of sifk cards back minsize, which I later sold with the minsize label. Then they seem to have started holdering that card at the size they rejected mine. Costing me dollars.

This is the main reason I just stopped sending cards to PSA a couple years ago. I'd pull cards out of 70s boxes my own self, send them in and get them sent back MinSize. The wait times and the low grades for fresh vintage made me realize I was a relic whose business they didn't want.

Their whole job is to provide honest consistent grading to all of their customers.
