Usually I'm not a fan of "buy the best grade you can afford", preferring mantra like “buy what you understand” or considering how a piece will fit into a larger set instead. In this case the cliche would have made sense, as eight months after buying a PCGS 15 and making it raw, I've up graded to the coin below. Its graded by ICG as a 40 and came with a relative discount to comparable in the Big 2. Most certainly looks problem free in-hand, and has a lot to like: a better strike, devoid of distracting hits or stains and has nice XF surfaces. In sum just a technically solid piece with eye appeal. It is also a much better fit for the set that has evolved into XF- MS.

Super nice key date. Good example of buying the coin not the plastic.

I could see that in an AU holder. Nice coin, mine is a XF40.

That is a nice acquisition... I would say an XF coin....Is your set in slabs or did/do you crack them out? Cheers, RickO

This set is raw, started as mostly raw buys but more pieces started off certified as I upgraded.

Super nice key date. Good example of buying the coin not the plastic. I’ve had decent luck with ICG, although the buys are pretty thin. I’m 2 for 2 in crossing at grade, and those having been long standing pieces in other sets. In this case I have to believe the holder chased off other suitors, as I was only bidder. Figure that saved me at least $100 over ‘average auction’ for something that is nicer than ‘Average auction’
