I like the 1849. Not a fan of the differing/incongruous toning on the 41-O.

Just tell me which one you don’t want.😉

Obverse 1, reverse 2, but if that’s not allowed, 1.

I’m not a huge fan of that color change behind the shield on the first. I think the second is overall a more pleasing example.

2, the first one is decent, but has the classic cleaned and retoning look.

For whatever reason, I don’t like blue toning.
Golden brown is my favorite look on silver.
    Therefore #2 has my vote.

    I like #1 the best for obverse and }

2 for reverse but obviously it’s all personal opinion.

The second one , but without the toning.
    Is that acceptable ?

Both would be welcome in my collection! The 1841-O is a fairly tough date that won't come as well struck as the 1849 (which is also kind of tough), so it would probably never match up. If only one selection, I give the edge to #2.

Eye appeal alone ... I think I would take #2

First coin looks more likely cleaned at some point, second appears to be possibly unmolested, so #2

I agree that coin 2 looks more original. But are you equating eye-appeal with originality, or does coin 2 look more eye-appealing for a different reason?

    2 the 1849

  • rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,629 ✭✭✭✭✭

I like the overall natural look of the 1849 better. That being said, don't underestimate the power of the carbon spot above "HALF" when it comes time to sell the coin. Black spots on "original" Seated coins are the norm, yet I have found that many buyers shun coins that have them.

    Obverse of # 1, reverse of # 2. If I had my choice, # 2

  • keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭

    the first for me.

to enter into the "cleaned" debate, is it the lack of overall tone on the obverse that has you guys thinking that?? to that end, the second coin could have been cleaned and re-toned longer than the first. I would accept neither or both before I'd think one and not the other.

    Reverse #2

I like number 1 just because it is an Omint. But I like all coins not just pretty ones

  • 291fifth291fifth Posts: 24,360 ✭✭✭✭✭

The photo of #1 looks overexposed. The photo of #2 looks just right. I suspect #1 actually looks much better in hand than in the photo. I am withholding final judgement.

At first I thought #1, but after consideration I have to go #2. The details are better and I have a gut feeling that #2 also has better luster.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Short answer- I ended up purchasing coin #2.

Long answer - I am working on my slabbed type set and one of the coins I needed was a seated liberty half dollar. I found #2 first and I thought it would be a perfect fit for my collection. But I decided to look around to see if I could find another one I liked better and I came across #1 and thought that one was great too. I really couldn’t decide, I liked them both so much. I was even rationalizing buying them both, but I decided to just post this question and go with whichever most people thought had the best eye appeal.

They are both graded AU58, #1 is NGC, #2 is PCGS. #2 also is a double die with the date showing the doubling. I looked up the population report and that variety only has 8 graded with only one graded higher, so it has all that going for it. #1 would have been a bit cheaper, and I love the obverse where it almost looks cameo to me and the toning frames the portrait so nicely.

I was worried about jinxing things by posting here and maybe someone else might like it so much they would buy it before I decided, but I figured it was worth that risk because I really couldn’t decide.

Very nice coin - congratulations. I think it must be a recut date example, not a doubled die.

Great that you have a choice. I like #2 and the doubling is the deal breaker. Peace Roy

I prefer #2 except for the black "carbon spot" on the eagle's neck and the black spot above the "F" in "HALF."

I know you are just having some fun with my evasive answer... I thought the question was which of these Liberty Seated Halves has better eye appeal... so I would like to get a better look at the fields of both coins and make my decision based on that review. Eye appeal incorporates so much that sometimes we miss what we do not see.
