The dealer called it AG, and I was a little skeptical about that. Of course you hope for the elusive Poor 1 grade..... I checked out what this coin has been selling for on ebay, and it seemed it was doing better than Greysheet indicated. Usually better date and rare coins drop off significantly from GS pricing when you drop down to P1, F2, AG3, etc..
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I’d lean more toward 03 on this half. Seems a little better than 02.

Unbelievable what problem coins sell for on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1839-O-Capped-Bust-Half-Dollar-/114402260195?hash=item1aa2e7f4e3:g:iboAAOSw31pfWr9x&nma=true&si=j1BRQCNBlBe3YdZgclor10XK%2F2o%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
AG is fair. Not much price difference. If you are happy with what he called it, all is good.
I like it. A 39-O half...the first from New Orleans (discounting the controversial 38-O), and with an obverse mintmark.
Circulated to death. Very cool.
I don't think grade matters a whit.
Lance.
i agree with the ag-03 assessment

I agree with the 02 assessments....not that there are clear lines of definition between grades...Cheers, RickO
