Oooof Did that corner come out of the pack like that? Always my worst nightmare when ripping and I had a much worse incident with that same legendary Murray Rookie when ripping a full 3 box rack case. I pulled a stunning PSA 9 that sit's in my graded set today and another three that had the same attributes if not for a large bird crap like ink splotch on the three! It was the lone bummer from that epic case but it was a big one!

The Hargrove is actually a nice card. I have found it to be a tough card to find without a diamond cut or OC.
There is a slight DC on this card but the glare from my man cave lights blocks out the bottom left border. You can see it on the right too, but it's slight. Agree it's a nice card. I had no idea it might be a toughie. Thx!
Going to back track a bit here to the sheet that WAS missing 105 Nolan Ryan. I don’t make a habit of cracking out PSA cards but I wanted a great example of this card without breaking the ‘ol budget. This was the best way to make that happen quickly. Honestly I can’t believe this card wasn’t an 8 after getting it in my possession. Love it. Almost too clean to be O-Pee-Chee. Welcome back to the world of raw Nolan lol
I always was amused by Mickey hobbling around like an elderly man when he was on-deck or approaching the batter's box. He could flat out fly but you wouldn't have guessed by watching him walk. LOL
Superb set so far! I need to look at my own 78 OPC set in the old binder now!

Steve Garvey is right at that OPC centering threshold for me. T to B front centering saves him and I have decided to keep him off the upgrade list for now as the card is nearly OPC flawless otherwise and a great back.
Thurman! One of my favorite players of all time. Needs to be upgraded. Can’t have Thurman that OC even with great T to B centering.

Steve, there were THREE games before the Murcer game. The game I was at on 8/3 was the first after his death. Then there were games on 8/4 and 8/5. The funeral was on Monday 8/6 and the Bobby Murcer game was that night. All four games were vs Baltimore.

Andy, thanks! So cool to put up some stuff a handful are being entertained by. Also, no man, THANK YOU for kicking my butt in gear on going through every last '78 Topps card I have. It needed to be done like a year ago. Can't wait to see that set when it's finished. Well, they are never really FINISHED are they? hahaha
I'm really enjoying this thread.
softparade, most of the one's you have noted as needing an upgrade are the tougher cards in the set. I worked on this set for several years, and to this day I've never seen really nice examples of a handful of cards. I'm pulling these scans from my retired graded set. https://psacard.com/psasetregistry/baseball/company-sets/1978-o-pee-chee/alltimeset/23374
From what I remember, Gary Carter was the toughest HOF'er in the set to land above an 8.
Here are the only cards I never found 9/10's of before I retired the set.

Jaw dropping cards! I have no more teeth! Do you still own the set or did you sell it off? THANKS for sharing!!!!!! It's fitting that a high percentage of my upgrade list are notorious toughies. Good to know as I am not as in tune with those subtleties like I am the with the flagship Topps issue.

Thanks! I'm literally putting it together as I go here. I'm picking each card as I go. The rewards of accumulating a nice reserve of quality pack fresh raw. The time was ripe!

I think the Murray presents extremely well. I'd say 7 to 7.5 due to that corner. Slight chance at an 8 IMHO but it is a very nice card.
Maybe it’s the dreaded 7.5!
I would be happy to get a 7.5 on that card.
Good luck!

Now I am remembering. The Murcer game was a big deal because they were all at the funeral that day.
Yes, Steinbrenner was asked what would happen had they not made it back in time and he responded by saying then we'll forfeit the game because we're not missing this.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
Dan, this is such a great thread. I read everything; I'm guilty of not commenting. Mia culpa. And thanks for the 1978 Topps starter set. It garners much admiring.
Andy

Dan
When can we move this to a 77 and 79 OPC thread! Those need love too.
LOL There are only 3.5 sheets left and the set is done. Minus upgrades! I have a cool item to show at the end.

David,
You can I were the only people buying high grade '78 OPC about 15 years ago. At that point, I contacted PSA and got the set listed on the registry.
Don’t dare me or I am going to post some minty 79’s. Some with legit 10 shots.
Getting close to the set end! Just 3 more pages after this one.

HOF’er Carlton Fisk needs to be upgraded.
I love the the HOF’er George Brett! A bit OC L to R but T to B is amazing and the card is super clean.
Matthews and Byrd are exceptional with an honorable mention to Sparky Lyle.

That Thompson's not too shabby either!

From the looks of the set, you have a very nice, high set. Overall centering is great for the issue.
Thanks! I'm literally putting it together as I go here. I'm picking each card as I go. The rewards of accumulating a nice reserve of quality pack fresh raw. The time was ripe!

Your raw set is really looking good!
