NEWP 1833 Capped Bust Quarter Dollar for my type set

I recently picked up this 1833 quarter dollar. I'd be interested to hear your comments. These are (relatively) tough to find in a pleasing example. It's very clean of hits, and has some remaining luster, but has obviously been dipped maybe a bit longer than required. OR... Is this just how they come these days? Your thoughts? Thanks!

Very nice. You’ve got a good eye.

I like it! I’m not a purist when it comes to original surfaces. I’d rather have something that’s been dipped one too many times than a coin with ugly toning that’s not been dipped enough .

Looks like a 53/55 coin that was dipped (as you suggested in your OP) and lightly wiped or mishandled when rinsing/drying.

While CBQ's are especially tough to find in mid AU, I think you will find many who will pass on this when you go to sell (at least at good money) because it is too bright and is not original.

I'm a fan of original skin, but that isn't always for everyone either.

This is not a bad looking coin for what it is, and I think the hairlines Mark mentioned are somewhat accentuated from the angle of the slab shot and the lighting used for that picture.

Studying the TV shows a nicely doubled obverse profile with a similar look to the "laced lips" CBH varieties, and there is plenty of detail with shades of luster. The traces of hairlines show there too, but much less pronounced.

If it was mine, I would be tempted to free it from the plastic and let it reside in an Album for the next decade.

    my 2 bits ;)

I like the strike and the luster.
My personal preference would be to have some toning on it, but it is what it is, as they say.
Nice bust halves and half dimes are relatively abundant; dimes and quarters, much less so.

I like the kind of quarters that @spacehayduke collects. If I were doing a type set and choosing just one, I would hold out longer for a really sweet one.

I think your analysis of the coin is spot-on.

    Nice coin

Even with all the comments above (accurate indeed), it is still a nice coin that has endured 187 years of combined commerce and collectors. Cheers, RickO

With respect, I think you could do better.

Thanks, HST, the 32's and the 33's in AU grades that are PQ with great surfaces are very hard to find (as the others have said). The PO has a nice coin, a B1 die marriage (3 pale gulles on the shield, period after C2), nice but a bit too dipped (for my taste) I would agree with. Still a nice appealing coin.

    Best, SH

So much of our hobby is relative. A lot of our forum members collect high end coins with high end budgets. Some collectors treasure their 3 figure coins and are proud of their sets. Others treasure their 4 figure coins and others their 5 figure coins. All are fine in their collections. I posted a nice 2K classic coin only to have another member reply “oh my eyes” and post his 700K coin as a comp. It is all relative.
Holding out for a better example of anything staying in your price range is fine but it can always be said that a better example at 4 times the price is nicer. It’s all relative.
Edited to add ... if you like the coin than it is perfect for you.

IMO it’s a beautiful coin. It would be a highlight of my collection. Congratulations

I like her! In a few years it will retone I think nicely.

@jrocco I don’t think people are saying go buy a 66. Just that within the 40 grade there are examples that may have more original surfaces. However they will also likely be darker so it’s a matter of aesthetics for the OP to decide.

    I wouldn't count on that.

This I totally agree with. And this is what makes the hunt so much fun. We try to get the best we can find within our budget.
What I was referring to is when someone is looking to spend say $400 on a particular coin and another member shows a $4000 coin and says it is nicer.
    Well D’oh.
Like looking at a 2021 Camry and someone says a 911 is much nicer.
    Well yes it is 🤪
