2020 marks the Quadricentennial for the Pilgrims’ landing. 🦃4️⃣0️⃣0️⃣.

Coincidentally, a few months back I came across this amazing SC$ celebrating the landing’s Sestercentennial 🦃2️⃣5️⃣0️⃣, while browsing some random old YouTube coin show videos. Hey, if you can’t be on the bourse yourself, watching other folks shakily film case after case of coins on past bourses is actually pretty fun. 🤓 While some random dude was filming this piece just jumped out at me and I thought, “Oooooo, that looked cool, what was that?”

Long story short, I took a blurry screen-shot of the vid, posted it on the BST, and with help from @U1chicago tracked it to @njcoincrank and his company Numismatic Americana.

Not much later I’m holding it at the post office and thinking “Dayum!” ... it’s an uber flashy toner with special PL fields (from the silver plating process), and gorgeous frosty high-relief design elements. It just sparkle pops all over the place. (‘sparkle pops’ is a rarely used numismatic term ... trust me)

If you research this one you’ll see it comes in different compositions—brass, copper, white metal, silver plate, and maybe just 1 (?) in silver that resides at the Pilgrim Hall Museum in Plymouth, MA, built by the Pilgrim Society.

This is a pop 1 in silver plate at PCGS with just 1 higher ... a 67 that also happens to be wonderfully toned, and both are plated in Coinfacts. And I count 13 pilgrims ... perhaps a nod to the 13 Colonies.

You just never know what might catch your eye out there. Happy hunting. ⭐️

Tremendous! This is one of my favorite So-Called Dollars! I just posted that particular specimen 5 days ago on the Bill Shamhart thread. It found a great home!

I have a bunch of these. Here are just a few.

This one is my HK-13 in PCGS MS64. I'm a big fan of the fall colors on this one.

This is another HK-13 of mine in ANACS MS65. This is silver plated like the others here but you might not know it from these photos. It has the thinnest gossamer sheen of silver which is very reflective at the right angles.

A great thing about these is that the design as also used on this Scovill store card which seems much more rare than the So-Called Dollars themselves. I have 2 of these aluminum store cards now. If you look closely, you'll notice some design differences between the store card and the So-Called Dollar.

@Zoins cool examples, I too love the 64’s Autumnal color palette. Nice info on the related store card design too.

@U1chicago thanks again for the 411.

@Meltdown yes Sir it can be very small.

@Namvet69 right? 13 different people all doing something yet it’s still quite balanced—then the simpler bold Bible centered on the reverse—the modern mint designers should study closely and learn a thing or two or three...

Finding one of those in that condition is exceptional. I recall owning one back in the mid-1980's (not the silver plated version) that had the more usual AU look. The dispersal of several major collections of so-called dollars in the past 30 years has brought many more nice condition pieces to market than were seen when I was collecting some of them.

    All glory is fleeting.

Thanks. It’s the first SC$ I’ve owned...I don’t really know any provenance on this particular piece, or if it was part of one of the ‘major‘ collections you note. Just loved its look.

That's a great piece of your first So-Called Dollar!

My usual collecting scientific method goes like this:

    Oooo, that looks cool/pretty/eye appealing!

Do I have the fun money for it?

    That’s it. 😆
